hi guys i bought a fe cast iron large runner intake manifold on ebay its pretty clean. the staping codes are :6F16 and under C5AE84850. on what was this intake?is it good at all?
whats the best heads i could match with this intake?does the stock 390 2v heads will need a lot of work to be great or should i go for something else?
i also heard about mixing and matching other rods and crank from fe engine to get your 390 to a bigger displacement. true? if yes whats the best deal?
well sounds like you got an early intake w/ the significantly larger ports. The best heads to match that intake would be probly the EDC's, but you will probly never find those, so heads w/ these castings should be good w/ that intake.
C1AE, C4AE-G, C6TE Those will be your most common.
The newer heads which have the smaller ports won't work well w/ that intake, but they have a much more desirable cumbustion chamber. The common ones are C8AE-H, or D2TE-AA. But I would recomend the older ones.
If you can find a 428 crank, you can use that w/ your 390 rods, and some pistons to match the setup and make a 410. Alot of people do it, because it is fairly cheap and easy compared to the alternative. Somone else here will know the part number of the pistons you would need to do that, but I do not. basically Ford made 410's for the mercury's back in the day, and your gonna need a 410 piston.
The only change will be that you will have a little more stroke. the 390 has 3.78" of stroke, where the 428 crank will give you 3.98"
where do you get all those casting number description?
There is a good book by Steve Christ called "How to Rebuild Big-Block Ford Engines" it has just about every block, head, or intake casting number listed, usually with some specs. (For example, combustion chamber sizes for different heads.) It seems to be the most recommended FE book.
EDC heads were very early in the Fe line, then Ford changed their numbering system. In a nutshell, C='60s, D='70s, the number after that is the year in the decade: C6 would be a 1966 design, D2 would be a 1972 design.
1966 was a big year for change. Most, but not all intake ports were smaller. There was extra material cast around the exhaust exit for the GT exhaust bolt pattern, and air injection ports, depending on need. If you look in my gallery you'll see the differences between the C4AE-G and C6AE-R exhaust ports.
Here is a comparison of early to late intake ports. A C4AE-G next to a C8AE-H:
For a quick reference, go to fordfe.com and put your casting numbers in the search window. These guys know the errors in the Christ book as well.
If you have a self serve yard, start there. Look at both cars and trucks for the casting numbers you want. After thirty years you are likely to find most anything bolted together. Two weeks ago I saw two of the more common, but still desireable head castings almost side by side. By now they could be on their way to China: Walmart needs to sell some bicycles ya know.
