Tex you're brilliant.... best idea I've heard about that situation. At least if you submit some sort of needs survey the computer won't argue which is better, just what suits your needs.... ALTHOUGH, as deep as this argument runs, the server might start calling you names and insulting your family.. who knows??? And no offense to the original poster, if you hang around this site long enough, you will see what we're talking about. Kel, it's like the blue light... I'm like the skeeter.
We just wanna' participate. Most of us aren't professional mechanics and don't really have anyway to contribute with out a post like this. Trust me when I say, "you don't want me telling you how to fix a PSD, but if you want to know how to drive one..."
I would never own another diesel, unless it was in a truck or boat, or maybe some other vehicle. I love my V10 and wouldn't trade it for a diesel, ever, unless I found a good diesel that was better than my V10. I'm just being facetious.
I like these threads, and I really think the original posters are wanting the objective differences.
The diesel costs more up front, costs more to maintain and have more torque (read torque, not "power"). Cost up front is somewhat offset by resale, BUT, the V10 doesn't cost as much up front, so there is no need for offset. People were pulling campers, trailers, fifth wheels long before the days of 450 - 650 lb ft of torque. They were doing it with engines that had less power and worse mileage. With the right gearing the V10 has more rear wheel torque than the 7.3L diesel, but it doesn't have as much as the 6.0L. They will both likely run until the sheet metal rusts through. Diesels are known to run for several hundred thousand miles, the V10 is gaining that reputation.
The V10 is damn near bulletproof and will run all day at high RPM; the diesel will "chug" along at low rpm all day. There is a difference in how you drive a gasser vs a diesel and to have someone explain it that hasn't driven both probably won't be objective.
It would seem, diesels are getting worse mileage the newer they are due to emissions requirements. Check the V10 and diesel forums and do a search for mileage threads. I was told the diesel would average 18 - 20mpg, and bottom line is it doesn't for most people. I was also told the gas engine would average 9 - 11mpg and it doesn't. The diesel averages closer to 15mpg and the gas averages closer to 11mpg. I think there are a lot of misconceptions about gas engines based on 351/390/460 and other gas engines, and the V10 is a marvel (in my opinion) in comparison to those older engines.
I guess you can tell I'm a little biased, but I really like my V10. It pulls great, it doesn't stink, it isn't loud and there isn't anything I've tried to do with this truck that it couldn't do that a diesel would have done. There just isn't a significant difference between the capabilities of the two (although the gasser will have a slightly higher payload capacity).
I too had a 'choice' of the diesel or V10. In fact, I had a V10 all picked out but for whatever reason, the dealer t'ed me off by not running up to wherever the truck was and bringing it back to me .... after the 3rd time that it was supposed to be here, and wasn't, I went looking and found the left-over 05 DIESEL I was hoping to get anyway....and a different dealer. The first one also told me there were no diesels left-over in the state - HA. I do NOT run the truck anywhere near 15-30k a year, but you just can not wipe that Power Stroke smile off my face!!!
If you are going to tow anything bigger than a 20 footer, I'd recommend a diesel...but that's ME. If you want a gasser, GET a gasser. If you wnat a six-oh grin, get the diesel!! It's only money and you can't take it with you. Enjoy yourself, it's later than you think.
I wanted a Diesel but with an extra 4-5k more than my V10 used it wasn't worth it. I can buy alot of gas for 4k. I also wanted to do a greasel kit which would be about another 5k. Plus lift, tires, stereo, etc. Figured the extra cost in gas would not outway the mpg savings in the diesel.
I also don't drive it more than 50-60 miles a day to work and back. If I was going to put 100K a year on a truck than I would get the diesel. Also the regular maint. cost are higher.
