I'm looking to get started on "enhancing" my '97 F-350 - 460 EFI, 'cause I know it's capable of way more than it's doing now. I've been looking at a Comp Cam in the 268H or 272H range because I was so pleased with past installs in 390's and 400's (Carbed). But, I'm wondering about what I may need to do about the Mass Air Sensor on this '97 EFI 460? I've seen several options for cams, but there's always a reference to changing the Mass Air sensor with no additional information as to who, or what.
I also plan on flat top pistons (~9.35:1?) and some porting and polishing. Can the present setup learn and adapt to what I'm planning, or do I need to do some air and other "exterior" intake or air/fuel mixture work? I really don't want to have to resort to a carb again.
I'm running 32" almost stock tires, Stock 4:11 gears on a 5-Speed manual, Tach's 2500 at 75MPH. Stock exhaust manifolds into a 3.5" Diesel exhaust welded on where the Y comes together at 3.5" diameter, No Cat.
Can you guys get me started in the right direction?
Thanks in Advance!
Chuck

Well, I think it's the stock air velocity sensor that somebody's lopped off the venturi part to get more flow, which I think isn't the thing to do on a velocity sensor. I have seen a couple after-market mass air sensors, but not for the 460. From what I can see, air-velocity sensors and mass-air sensors don't mix and match, right?
I should have clarified that on my first post. Sorry. What do you think?
as far as i know your engine dose not have a maf, unless it is different from a 95. if this is the case then a cam change is a no no. it will not idle good and fuel mileage suffers. ive already tried it. the flat top pistons are good and maybe some L@L headers if you want to stick with f.i. I would bet on premium fuel though with that little stock cam even in cheyenne

yah sry this is way off topic but i live in buffalo wyoming and where is pinedale at here is the square state, wow its kinda weird that 3 people from a state of 500k ppl all happen to be in this part of this forum
Yeah, Raider, 500K people during tourist season, huh?Back to matters at hand, forum-wise...
Hey Troy! I lived in Jackson 10 years, used to run sleds with Bucky's bunch out of Pinedale. I really don't mind a lopey idle, which I had with the 268 & 272 Comp Cams. Mileage isn't a real consideration, either, as most people don't buy a truck like this or fix it up to run with fuel economy in mind. What I want is a puller. Something I can drop a 9K pound trailer on and pass them stock pickups going up the summit.
If I could do a cam, pistons and a little head work, and get the proper air sensor setup and have it adapt to what I've done, that would be great. If not I'll have to go a different direction. (Like saving up for a SC setup!)
If somebody's got a setup like this that they're satisfied with, I'd sure like to hear about it.
Thanks
Chuck
id be saving for the supercharger or swapping to a carb top end. a bigger cam wont help you for towing because the bigger cam raises your rpm ranges and cuts low end power (which is what you need for towing)
That's understandable. Changing all this stuff would warrant changes to the "brains" of the whole sheebang, which is what I'm looking for. I know all the internal pieces parts to make it a puller, but trying to "outsmart" or tune-in the electronics that control the whole mess is where I need some direction. The cam, pistons and induction tweaking are the easy part. Making it run right is the fun part. Caving in to a carburetor would be admitting defeat...

all if the 97 F150, F250, F350, and F450 (if gas, not diesel) had MAF, i.e. mass air.
On the 7.5L/460cid F-series of that vintage the MAF was sized whereas you could flow about 25% more into the engine and still be within the sensor range. So enjoy a "fun" cam it should work without having to monkey with the electronics.
Though, you can use software to adjust the parameters to get things "tuned" just right.
someone said somthing about a supercharger, dose anyone know of a supercharger for the 460EFI my 97' 460 needs some more go power and im looking for anything at this point in time
