won't start after sitting

95 f150 w/ 300-6. after it sits for several hours or overnight it won't crank up unless i put starting fluid into the intake. the fuel pump is new and it comes on when i turn the key on, but it won't fire up on it's own. can someone give me a list of the possibilities?? once it's been running it will crank back up on it's own also.

If starting fluid in the intake is fixing it, then it must be fuel delivery. How's your fuel pressure? When it doesn't start, plug a spark plug - is it wet?

If I were guessing I would say you have a bad ECT sensor causing a too lean to start condition.

Fuel pressure is checked at the fuel manifold with the key on, pin#6 (the LB/O wire 926) of the DLC grounded and the engine not running.
You should have about 55 psi pressure.

It has two wires on it.
ECT - Engine Coolant Temperature sensor

Yes, here is a diagram of the Fuel Manifold.
In the diagram below it is called the "Fuel Presure Relife Valve".

The ECT on the 300 is right in front. It's a sensor that screws into one of the water lines that run to the heater core.

You will need a fuel pressure gauge - about $25 or so at a parts store - to check the fuel pressure.

ok, i know where the temp sensor is, but when the truck is running the guage shows it around between the N and O. which people have said on here is normal, how would it effect the vehicle when cold?? thanks for the help guys, tomorrow i go pick it up from the paint shop and will be able to dig into this problem.

The Engine Coolant Temperature sensor has nothing to do with the temp gauge. The temp gauge gets its information from the engine temp sender with one wire on it.
The Engine Coolant Temperature sensor information only goes to the PCM Computer and is the most important sensor for the fuel ratio.

i gotcha, so that could be why it will crank up ok after it's been running, but not when cold. that makes sense. i might pick one up tomorrow on my way to paint shop and put that in before i ever try to crank the truck up and see what happens.

Make sure the one you buy has two wires on it!
