Question Full Front Tilt

HAS ANYBODY TILTED A FRONTEND WITHOUT CUTTING THE FENDERS IN HALF? IF SO HOW DID U SECURE THE BOTTOM OF THE FENDERS.

It depends on the year of the truck. I have seen it done on 48 through 52 trucks without cutting the fenders. On a 53 through 56 you will need to cut the fenders in one of two places. Ether cut it at the back of the wheel well at an upward angle towards where the cab meets the back of the hood or cut the fender at the very bottom so that you remove the section that wraps under the cab. I have lots of pictures of 53-56 trucks with full tilt front ends if you are interested. Send me a PM and I will send you some.

scott told you right. I've seen some attempts to slide the whole doghouse forward enough to clear the curve of the cab... but none that I thought didn't look 'cootie-bob'. some involved drawer slides (heavy duty of course) some involved motorized trailer jacks and some had elaborate bellcrank/cam and shaft assemblies that would make "Rube Goldberg" proud...

The simple way is cut the fenders high along the body line... but that involves finishing out the lower fenders...

The cut at the lower part, near the bottom of the cab.. 'looks' cleaner but leaves the cab exposed to the fender edges and scuffs/scratches in the cab paint from the open/close cycles.

and all that is AFTER you get a hood/cowl fit that you can't throw a cat through... good luck... well done fiberglass front flips are not for the faint of heart or faint of time or faint of money...

I realized after I sent 1st my reply that I was incorrect. As John said, you can do a full tilt front end on a 53-56 without cutting the fenders. I have seen one truck (I actually have pictures in my gallery) that did it this way. The actuators pushed the hood forward about 5" before it flipped it up. Someone put a LOT of time and money into this setup!

One draw back to cutting the fenders at the bottom where it curves under the cab is, when you have the front end flipped open, the fenders extend way into your work area. I can see them getting in your way and possible knots on your head.

I am in the same boat and am still working out how I want to do it...that is why I am starting with other stuff on the truck first.

Hey...you do it first and then you can show me how
I have been collecting pics of effies I see with steel and fiberglass front tilts. Hopefully I will be able to peice it all together when the time comes!

Goof Luck!

I sent you some additional pictures of hinges and latches. I hope this helps. If you run across directions for installing a full tilt front end or do's & don'ts please pass it on.

The front end on mine had been converted to full tilt without cutting the fenders (thank goodness!). There is a small filler piece on the lower portion that has to stay with the cab rather than with the fenders so they can clear the cowl. It is very close and the front is pretty flexible so you need two people to guide it past the cowl (and to lift it if you don't add some sort of assist. They didn't have any type of latch on the fenders that I can find evidence of. The owner before me converted it back to conventional operation but left the chrome hinges and cut inner fender panels in place. I have finished returning it to stock mounting so I have the hinges and inner fenders (torch cut) available if you are going that route. Do the next owner a favor and don't cut good steel fenders.
