Hey, I have a leaky valve cover, and I believe I need to replace the gasket...can anyone give me some advice on how to go about doing this:tools, specifics, etc. Your help is much appreciated!
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 16-Jan-02 AT 06:46 PM (EST)]i have a 90 bronco with a 351 and did the same thing last weekend, all you need is a 9/16 7/16 and 1/2 inch socket and some extensions, other than that no special tools needed, the only suggestion i can make is when you put the new gaskets on be sure to put some high temp permatex (black stuff in a small can) on the valve cover, then put the gasket on and let it dry to the valve cover for about 15 minutes and then leave the other side of the gasket dry and put it on be sure to double check the tightness of your bolts or else you will be doing the job twice, i promise you. i hope this info helps, if you need anything else let me know.
p.s. be sure to let the gasket dry to the valve cover, if you dont when you tighten the bolts the gasket will slide inside the valve cover and when you pour the new oil in it will pour out between the gasket and the head good luck
There are TWO types of Gaskets.
Cork & Neoprene .
I prefer the Cork.
I usually soak the cork gasket in hot water for 1/2 hour before installing.
Copper Gasket sealer on the valve cover side.
*NOTE
Important to remember: When Torquing down on Valve cover Bolts,
Be VERY careful not to OVER-TIGHTEN them as they will crush the gasket, split it open and you will still have a leak.
This also goes for neoprene gaskets.
Don't over torque them.
