My 93 explorer has got me stumped. My idle has been jumping between 800-1100 most of the time, and somtimes it seems to stay aroung 800. I have just replaced the IAC and cleaned the mass air sensor. Its a 5 speed and it has a clean air filter and ideas of why it does this, I just can't figure it out.
I had a surging idle problem with my 94 a few years back. Turned out to be the PCM(on board computer which amongst other things, controls the idle speed). Not saying this is your problem, but it is something to be explored.
Another possibility is coolant thermostat has gone bad. Search the threads on this topic and you'll find many good posts on symptoms - mine went on my 2000 XLT and replacing the thermostat fixed the idle issue.
I might need a tune up but I replace the plugs and wires about 3.5 years ago. I used motorcraft wires and bosch plat 4 plugs, they should still be good. I will have to look into the thermostat.
I have an issue with the plat-4's, get them out and use Motorcraft dble plats or NGK plats.
I experimented with the Bosch plat 4's in a 92 and 97 X engine, sent plugs to bosch after 1000k for testing (missfire and cracked insulators), they recommended I use plugs other tham B.... in my FORDS, so what does that tell you?
Thanks I will look into the motorcraft plugs. Well I feel like this is going to be a expensive summer, 150,000 with no problems but looking at her latley I know she needs plugs, brakes, shocks, thermostat, and tires. I better start looking for beer sales.
