Timing advance question
Should the engine get quieter when it warms up enough to kick off the higher idle? I notice that when the RPM drops down to the normal warm idle speed, it doesn't get any quieter. I can move the advance arm and it quiets down (and smokes) when I do that, so I'm pretty sure it's not sticking. I'm basically just wondering what's normal.

When the cold advance is still on, and you start driving you should have a definate powerstroke rattle, say at 2000 rpm, then when the advance cuts off, the powerstroke rattle again at 2000 rpm or so- should be gone. It's hard to hear much differance at idle with no load on the engine, but sould be clearly different under some load. Depending on what you mean by quieter, if you dont have what sounds like a pre-ignition rattle with the advance on, you can likely advance some till you achieve it, or if you always have the rattle, retard it a bit until you can definately hear a differance between cold on or off. IMHO anyway!

Check the wire to the Cold advance solenoid for power when cold key on, check it again when warm engine running...... there should be no power when warm. If there is there is a problem. You could run a jumper 12V+ from the battery to the solenoid to listen for a change in sound when connected/disconnected running.
All the advance is is an internal solenoid that lifts the check ball in the fitting on top of the IP just before the 90*/return line .. When the fuel pressure is relieved it allows the timing to advance ........
