I just got a 85 f150 and took it to get it inspected and it failed because of a rusted out muffler and a trailer harness hanging down but he also failed it because he said that the brake check light didnt come on when he turned the key. They are really hard on inspections here in va. I pushed the ebrake down and the light came on so it cant be the bulb. I also noticed that this truck has a T fitting at the master cyl. and a line ran for the brake controler in the cab. The guy inspecting it said that there may have been a switch there or a computer that checks the brake system. Has anyone got any idea of where to start. I have to get it fixed cause you only have 15 days to ride around on a rejecton sticker and Ive already got 3 tickets in this truck so maybe someone has an idea. thanks

The emergency brake warning lamp and the check brake warning light are two different things. The "check brake" warning light works off a switch on the disc brake proportioning valve located inboard of the left front wheel. This is a brass valve where the brake lines attach. This light tells the driver when brake fluid is low. On the brass valve itself is a screw in plastic switch which fails on a regular basis. They alse have a nasty habit of leaking, by developing minute cracks to the threads. When they leak, the check brake warning light comes on...and stays on...a PITA. For that reason, some PO may have disconnected it by pulling off the wire connector plug. Replacing the switch may solve the problem. The switches are available from Ford and auto parts stores, and are cheap.
I think he is saying the bulb check feature is not working. All the bulbs should light when the key is first turned to make sure they work.
If I remember right, they have a special wire coming from the ignition switch that works this feature. I can't remember exactly how it works, but if you go buy a Haynes manual at the store, it's in the diagram in the back of the book.
P.S. You are not supposed to drive on a rejection sticker, only to and from the garage to get it worked on or re-inspected. I have done it myself, but thought you might like to know the official rule. Also if you get fed up and need the truck, you may be able to wire the brake light to one of the other dash lights that work like he wants, just to get them off your back.
