Question 94 Vacuum system.

Howdy!

I bought a 94 4WD Aerostar from an auction at the beginning of last month. I had to replace the front CV joins (pain in the butt), but I still have another issue haunting my van. It's been happening since I bought it. The van sputters, surges and/or tries to die when it's idling. It is the worst when you have the van in gear (automatic) and the foot-brake applied (waiting for a red light to change). If you put the van into Park, it's much less noticeable (waiting for the drive-throu line at McDonald's to move). Once you start to apply the accelerator the surging goes away and the van runs great (fleeing with the extra BigMac they gave you by mistake). I've tried injector cleaner, gas treatment additives and nothing has fixed this problem. Then about two weeks ago I noticed a pop, hiss then very little brakes. The vacuum hose for the brake booster popped off. When I went to put it back on I noticed that the vacuum hose for the Cruse Control wasn't plugged in either. However there was only one free **** to put a hose onto. I weighed in my head that brakes are more important then being able to cruse, so the cruse-control is still disconnected. That got me to thinking that the surging issue maybe vacuum related, but I have not been able to find a diagram or another vehicle that I can look at to see where all the vacuum hoses go.

Can someone please link or post a diagram of the vacuum hose system for the 94 4wd Aerostar?

Hermmm, I am thinking it's the 3.0 if I remember correctly. I'll have a look tonight to make sure.

/edit/

I had a look at the diagram you posted. (please forgive the novice questions, I am not a mechanic). I didn't see any mention of the vac-hoses for the cruse-control or brake booster. Is there a diagram that shows where those go, if they are supposed to have their own nipple to connect to the main cylinder and if they are supposed to be branched off the two nipples that are availible (that I can see) via a "T" or "Y" connector? (there is a thrid vac-hose that is connected to a second nipple, but I am not sure what it's connected to).

Hi Media:

Welcome to our FTE forum

Merlynr:

There is a very small number of 3.0L AWD, almost zero. So you are right, if it an AWD, it's most likely a 4.0L.

I thought it was a 4.0 at first, but then I asked my GF's dad (he is the ford fixer guy), and he figured it was a 3.0. Ill check the stickers (if I can read them) to make sure.

I went and looked at my son's 4.0 awd(lives next door) and there are 2 vac lines going to the cruise control. One comes from somewhere at rear of eng. and the other one seems to come thru the firewall near the brake booster. the one from the brake booster swoops down and goes back up to rear of engine also. didn't take the doghouse off (pia).

Check the 8th digit of the vin code to confirm the engine.

It's a 4.0L engine, the sticker on the underside of the hood said so. I also saw the vacuum diagram however it only shows the brakebooster vac-line coming from the back of the engine. The cruise control wasn't shown anywhere on the diagram.

So I still have a cruise control vac line with no home.
