Rebuilding a 351W

I have a 1983 Full Size Ford Bronco with a 351W motor in it. I spun a rod bearing and have purchased a used engine for $400. I am going to pull out the old motor and rebuild it with high performance parts. I have never rebuilt an engine before and in my research have found many help pages for Mustang rebuilds. I don't need this kind of performance for my Bronco and need some help and or advice on how I should tackle this task. I know this is a loaded question and requires much time in response, but perhaps there is someone out there who had rebuilt a motor themselves who can help with a lamens walk-through.

WHAT I WANT IN THE END: A quality rebuild with high torque and performance for a 4X4 application. I have looked into Edelbrock parts but have been very confused with the different and very varied sizes and parts for the interior of the engine (i.e. rods, bores, etc.)

Thank you for your time with this and I appreciate anything that can help, from where to get parts to steps needed to complete this task.

Sincerely,

Brent Smith

Rebuilding a 351W

heybrent: (Or is that, "Hey, heybrent! ).

Go into the "Tech Articles" section of this site and read this article, for starters - Advice For Engine Rebuilding By Ken Haley. (It's a good piece). Also recommended is Tom Monroe's "Engine Builders Handbook." Get current copies of the Summit Racing, JEG's, and PAW catalogs and start planning a budget. Also, start talking to your local machine shop for prices on basic machine work as well as performance engine work (i.e. balancing, cylinder honing with torque plates, etc.) Not to derail your line of thinking on the rebuild, but it would be worth your while to check on prices in the PAW catalog, as well as with your local machine shop, for remanufactured short or long blocks. After doing the math, it may be worth considering using your engine as a core and purchasing the reman. Just a couple of thoughts to get you started. Good luck!

Rebuilding a 351W

I am in the process of rebuilding an '85 351W, I am replacing just about everything on the motor with new parts. So far I have got the motor bored .030 over and replaced the pistons. Got the heads serviced, new crank, aluminum intake, new Edelbrock Cam and timing Chain. Plus all the other small things (fuel pump essentric, ect.). With all this, I am looking at about $1500.00 with parts and machining.

Hope this helps

P.S.- I ordered most of my parts from Summit and Jegs. PAW seemed a little high for Ford Parts
