Where is the power ?

Just purchased a 92 F150 flareside nite edition with 87,--- The previous owner had it lowered. It really looks great. Although Im not impressed with the performance. For a V 8 it's mighty sluggish. Accelaration is a struggle. My last f150 87 could run circles around this one. What could this be ? I was thinking that the timing needs to be bumped up, or just gutt the cat. Also im always hearing the clutch fan. Should i take it off and replace with flex fan or good electric ? The guy I brough truck from stated that he replaced the clutch fan. The good thing about this truck, it runs super cool. the temp stays really low.

Need help !!!.

Thanks

If you are hearing the fan then the clutch is not working.. and it will really suck the power from the motor.
If you wade through a few pages of posts here you'll see lots of threads on "getting more power" out of these trucks. Start with the typical things to ensure the motor is in good shape, check compression and timing, plugs, wires and coil. Pull the codes from the computer. If all is good, then a free flowing exhaust will make it sound better and boost power some. The cam is the major roadblock on the stock motor, it's not the simplest thing to replace but offers the biggest bang for the bucks on the early motors. There's nothing else you can do for under $300 that will have the same impact.

before you start hanging all kinds of expensive aftermarket mods on there just invest in a really good tune up and service. then once you see what you really have you can go frome there. your fan change wont do much and you will need to make trade offs. for every thing you Chang from original. some are worth it and many are snake oil. I have herd so many posts here where some one takes off a dirty air filter and replaces the 6 dollar part for a 200 dollar so called upgrade and they say they get 20 more HP and 8 more MPG. on most stock or even slightly modified engines the stock clean air filter is good and you can afford to change it often.

when you go to get the parts for the tune buy good brand parts but dont wast money on expensive upgrades for example buy standard autolite plugs not the autolite platinum that cost 5 times more and dont work any better, and have them pull the codes to see if there is any clues to why it might be sluggish.

Ok,I'll start with the basics. Tune-up etc.. So should I change out the stock clutch fan for a flex fan set-up or go with electric set-up ? Also what can I do about that horrible belt noise. I spray the belt spray, but it's only very temp.

Thanks

The electric fans are nice... but expensive. They need to be setup with a temperature sensor to work correctly, so you don't have to remember to turn them on, and so they are not running all the time and just loading down the alternator. A proper fan clutch is much cheaper and provides sufficient cooling. That said, a friend of mine reports quicker warmup times in winter and better hwy milage with electric fans on his trucks.
Belt noise could be a pulley misallignment issue or failing bearing. Remove the belt and check all wheels for smooth and free operation(idler, alt, air pump), then install the belt and check for correct alignment with a long straight edge.
