Pulling Engine - Need To Do List

Shop confirmed passenger side head is cracked at the rear fuel port, they'll pull the engine to replace the head.

He suggested a valve job on the driver's side while engine's out.

Anything else you guys would have done while the engine's on the stand?

Thanks, Craig

Check oil pan for rust. Might be good idea to get new one and treat it with a rust prevention solution.

headgaskets

Craig go ahead and see if they'll install headgaskets for you from hypermax. If you ever plan on any big mods. . . its a nice thing to have done already. . .that and high rev valve springs. Really runs better on the top end with those springs.

Thanks, CEF2lion. Pan seems to be in great shape, one benefit of living in the south.

Tim, thanks for the tip on the gaskets & springs, I don't see any big power mods in my future -- I'm kinda mod shy right now. I'll definitely have them use the Hypermax gaskets though.

Probably a real good time to replace the injector O-rings.

Make SURE that every single bolt gets torqued to spec when they put it back together. None of the "hand-tight" or "that's good enough" stuff.

When the pan's off, make absolutely certain that the little cooling-oil nozzles in the crankcase are all secure and tight. Same for the oil-pump "pickup". Re-torque rod and main bolts to spec, just to be sure. Inspect and Plastigauge the bearings?

Regardless of power mods, a good Torque converter from PI, ATS, Suncoast etc would be a great investment. Also would be a good time for some mild stuff such as a wicked wheel, fuel system mod(cackle cure ), HPX. If you ever think in your wildest dreams you may go with a bigger turbo down the road, Head Studs are one thing that can't really be done in the truck. Depending on Mileage, a new water pump may be in order as well as a "just because".

Craig, you seem to be in a sad, yet unique situation. Motor being pulled...in Houston, Texas...Diesel Innovations...Houston, Texas...

The things I would promise to do, if my wife would let me go with an empty credit card to get my motor pulled...in Houston, Texas!!!

Then...of course, I would have a 600rwhp motor with a freshly over-cooked, strode-all-over-the-interstate, broken tranny!

Oh well, a man can dream.

Pop, good add on injector o-rings, I'm also having him go ahead and do glow plugs while it's out & easy access. I'm also gonna replace the long-lead injector on #8 if I've got one. Tim had a good add on the high rev springs and they're a cheap add.

FN74, good stuff, I've already got the WW in and the tranny was rebuilt about a month ago. HPX is in. Sad thing is I cracked the head putting in a regulated return system so that's gonna get done for sure.

Rampage, I like you're thinking, but it ain't so "sweet" yet. I've still got a pit in my stomach knowing this was all self-induced. The saying "first do no harm" keeps repeating in my head. I'm really looking for longevity and smooth clean pulling power.

I asked about the rear main seal while it was out and mechanic said if it ain't leaking he personally wouldn't touch it, but it was my call.

Thanks for the input , I'm really looking to get at least 300k on this truck (at 140k now) so mostly I'm not going for really big power.

Thanks,
Craig
