Ok. I installed another 512mb sdram. While I had it open I was going to install a larger hard drive. My question is, it has a sata wire. What in the name of pc geeks is a sata wire? The HD is a Maxtor 160 GB sata II/300 internal hard drive kit.
I was going to install it in a HP pavillion 512w. I think we bought it in 2000.
Wally World pkg. I diddn't want to open the wrap on the drive for fear, I could not get my money back. Any of you highly inteligent PC people out there, know if I can install this?

Thanks thats what I thought. Thats why I diddn't open it.
There are two types of interfaces currently on PCs for connecting a HDD.
One is EIDE or PATA (Older version of connecting the HDD) aka Parallel ATA
The other is SATA, aka Serial ATA.
The EIDE is the one with the wide 40 wire 'ribbon' cable that is on your older machine.
That about sums up my knowledge of the SATA stuff.

Now I know just as much as you. Man that feels good!!!!!!!!!!
Yup, it's a SATA controller card. It's what you buy when you have a SATA drive and need to hook it up to an older PC that doesn't have a SATA controller.
Most of the new drives coming out today are SATA. I don't know that you can even get EIDE drives in the larger capacities anymore.

Now you got me wondering why it was so cheap. Org. price $95.00 reduced to
$44.00 for a 160 GB. Hmm
