I have a 2006 f-250 with the 6.0 PSD. I just ordered a banks g-gun tuner for my truck. Will I have reliability issues out of it? Am I looking at installing something taht is gonna blow up my engine. The reason I ask is because alot of guys are telling me that I will be replacing it within the next month if I install the tuner. Now I realize that these motors have problems with the head gaskets and stuff, but am I being overly parranoid? Please help me out! Thanks
I don't have any experiance with Banks stuff, but I have found that most people say that no matter what tuner that you put in, it just depends on the fact that you had said tuner and they say there goes your truck. It really comes down to how responsible you are with that extra power to what effect it has on your truck(unless the Banks stuff has some problem that I am unaware of with that issue). I have the same year truck as you and I have yet to have any issues with headgaskets. Make sure if you do have any fun with your truck that you let it get good and warmed up, I would(and I have) added a water temp gauge to let me know when I have hit working temp(the factory one is still a little to fast on getting to that temperature, a little more reliable then the other gauges, but still too quick to say normal op. temperature). I don't know what all the g-gun tuner package entails as far if you need the pda to run everything or not or if you still need to add gauges, but gauges would help keep you from ruining the truck, and particularly the water temp gauge would help you from getting to hot from running it. Mine normally reads from 190-205(analog gauge so I'm guessing the range, the needle is between 180 and 210, so that is why the estimated range), I have gotten close to 210, but I just backed off and it went back down to normal temp after awhile. To sum up that rather long winded explaination, I don't think you will have any problems with it depending on how responsible YOU ARE with driving it barring any problems with the tuner itself.
The Banks kit is probably one of the safer tuners, simply because it doesn't give you as much power as the others on the market.
Just make sure you keep an eye on exhaust temps, boost, and tranny temps to keep your truck's engine away from damage. Quite a few folks have modified their trucks and driven many many trouble free miles. Push it too far or ignore your temps, and yes you can damage your engine in no time.
