installing sending unit

Hey guys, I am installing a new sending unit on my gas tank 78 F250 duall tanks. I had the "front" tank boiled out and re-sealed and am now installing the sending unit. My question is with the lock ring that twists in to hold in the sending unit: how far do you twist it on? I tapped it on with a screw driver untill it stopped. But it still looks like it could go some more if maybe I used a steel punch. But I dont want to bend the little tabs on the tank either?? Is this good enough?? Seems to be on tight enough but I am not sure and want to install the tank. Please help ..... I still have a few hours of daylight to work with. Thanks, Mason.

You did replace the gasket, right? Because if you didn't the old one won't seal properly. A new gasket will not be mashed flat like the old one was, so the lock ring will not go on as far. Tap it till it's tight, recheck it in a week or so.

Make sure you coat the locking ring with di-electric grease or a product called Corr-block so it won't corrode or rust and end up destroying your grounding connection.

Also, always use a brass punch if the tank has had fuel in it.
Doing this ... prevents sparks from happening.

Yes new gasket and everything! I'll use a brass punch and see if I can get it a little more on there. But I think it's on as good as it's gunna get without bending anything. Thanks for the help, Mason.
