I have an 86 351 HO and I want to give it some more grunt,I was wondering what a good cam would be to wake it up,intake and headers also,I know the factory intake is restrictive, the engine is in my 83 f150 4x4 with a standard trans.Any help would be great.
Here is what I'm running on my 82 F250 351W
Keith Black Hypereutectic pistons UEM-KB303030-8 (Summit Racing)
COMP Cams Xtreme Energy 4x4 Cam and Lifter Kits,Cam and Lifters,Duration 254/ 262, Lift .477/ .493
Edelbrock Performer Aluminum dual plan intake
Edelbrock Performer 600cfm Carburetor
Hedman full length headers HED-89270 (Summit Racing)
Accel superstock coil,plugs,and wires
C-6 Transmission, with a shift kit and a TCI satruday night special converter TCI-441700
2 1/2" Stainless steel exhaust
410 Gears in the rearend
I think that is it, the only thing I don't like about the set up is I wish I would have went with a bigger cam, you really can't hear it much and I love a good sounding cam.
Now the performance well for a 3/4 ton pickup that weighs 4500lbs it does the job. I can boil the tires of it, and i'm running some big meat.
Good luck
Paul
I've got a 86 f150 with the Ho 351. In my quest of better power and mileage, I tore off all the smog junk, hung a set of headman longtube headers backed by true dual exhaust with no cats. i have a holly 650, that my uncle fixed up, on the factory intake. i pulled the egr spacer off and blocked the hole with a piece of mountain dew can.
i've been screwing around with the timing, no idea where its set, turned it up a little high but i run premium gas in it.
the truck is a 350 dollar beater but it runs like hell now. mines running 3.73s with a locker, plenty of power to lay 2 big black stripes all the way through first.
You will have some improvement you can feel with headers and an aftermarket carb. Some people say they have improvement with a aftermarket intake, but I have never felt it myself.
Raising the compression ratio with flat top pistons will give some improvement too, but you may need to run more expensive gas.
More radical cams, higher flowing intakes and heads, etc. will give you higher horsepower numbers, but the higher horsepower will come at a higher rpm. This is ok if you want to run a stall convertor and higher number gear ratios in the rear, but you are getting into the area of a high performance race engine, which does not work very well sometimes for a truck that is used more in the lower rpms for pulling heavy loads.
