I have a new (07) F350 6.0 4X4. I have just purchased a new gooseneck horse trailer that is 9K empty and will be about 12K loaded with the horses. Is this too much for the truck or am I ok? I have never towed this much before, just tractors and such.
You should be alright, just watch your GVWR. Remember it's the combined weight of what the truck and trailer CAN, in theory carry. So if the trailer is GVWR 14k, and your truck is 15K gvrw that puts you at 29,000lbs. Granted the truck my only weigh 7k and the trailer 9k- if a trooper pulls you over or something and discovers that. Your arrested on the spot. I do it, but I get really nervous. Anything with a GVWR of over 26k, you need a CDL, unless its for recreation, or unless exempt by federal or state law.
You will be alright, I have towed more then that with my horses, you didnt say if it was a SRW or a DRW(what mine is), but you should be fine, I haven't had a problem with it at all. As far as the CDL goes, it is very hard to prove that an f-350 is there for commercial hauling, although if you do get caught and you do go to contest it, the judge will more then likely side with the officer. They will more then likely give you a citation if your doing that and are out of state(or if your tags list county of the state, if they know that you are from a far county they still might do that to you) as more then likely you won't go to court to fight it(sad but true). I have yet to be pulled over for hauling horses(fingers crossed, because with the smallest trailer that I have, it is still at that weight threshold), however this is a business, but I'm not in the horse hauling business which would constitute commercial hauling.
My truck is a SRW. I have a tag that goes up to 18,000 lb. If the truck is 7K, then the trailer loaded can only be 11K. I don't think I will ever get to 26,000 lbs. Does the 350 really weigh 7K?
Specs show that an F-350 (SRW) can tow a 17,000lb 5th wheel. 'Course actual towing weight is determined by the truck's config. I'd say you're okay but you may want to get your truck weighed so you know exactly where you stand.
Your GCWR (Gross COMBINED Weight Restriction) is 23,500lbs. Daggum!
I tow a 14k 5th wheel with my 05 F360 SC 4x4 6.0. Truck alone weighs 7860#. Combined weight (Cat certified scales) is a shade under 22K. I'm well under rear axle (and tire rating) rating.

I doubt you would ever be arrested for for towing anything that required a cdl. But in cal they will red tag vehicle and leave it on the spot until things are straightened out. In other words legal.
