My 92 Aerostar won't idle! I stopped at the store, and when I came out and started it up, the engine was humming like I was pressing the throttle! Engine speed decreases when I put it in drive gears, but won't go down in P or N after punching the throttle, killing and restarting, nothing. I recently replaced the water pump, but it ran fine after that after I tightened up the squeeling alt belt. What could cause this to occur so suddenly?
cant say for sure, but i had this happen on a ranger 2.9L and it ended up being the IAC motor. they can fail suddenly. its about a $50 part put takes a matter of minutes to replace, it will be located somewhere around the Intake manifold

My bet also.....look right after the big rubber hose going from the Air Cleaner to the intake. It sits off to the right (looking at it). Usually has a plastic cover protecting it......
check the linkage from throttle pedal to throttle body for sticking in cable or binding...sometimes floor dirt or floor pads jam gas pedal mechanism
check to make sure wire plug is still on IAC and contacts are clean, no corrosion or damage
search Aero forum or Ranger forum for IAC electrical testing
soak the old IAC in throttle body cleaner, anything stronger will eat up ans swell the neoprene diaphram and destroy it.
let dry
try after cleaning..if idle problem not solved=time for new one
