I finally got my problem with the camshaft synchronizer figured out so now I'm on to the smaller problems. Is there someplace that the Check engine light can easily be disconnected. The light hasn't worked since I got the truck and I'm pretty sure the previous owner was too lazy to go to much trouble to hide the light. Also the O/D switch is totally taken apart and the "handle" is broken off the shifter. I can't find the info in the haynes on how to replace the shifter. Is this very difficult. Oh I have a 1997 ranger, 3.0,167000, 2wd
To replace the shift select lever, you first have to remove the ignition switch. Then remove the upper steering column shroud and the shift lever rubber cover piece.
There's a pin that holds the shift lever assembly in place, pull that pin out and then the unit should be free. (FWIW, Ford says not to re-use the pin that was removed.)
The wire that runs to the CEL is PK/LG. It can probably be accessed at one of the instrument cluster harness connectors. The same wire can also be accessed at the large harness connector located under the hood, drivers side, kind of in the area between the brake booster and engine.
I like the annoying lights, just want to make them dark for 'inspection' so they don't hassle me, when that time comes due. Would rather find issue, and fix it, and if someone knows the wire ID, that will help, too.
Do you know the wire location ID? Thanks.
