I noticed my transfer case was wet today, and on further inspection it was bone dry. The rear seal is where it appears to be leaking. I had a similar problem with the rear axle on my last truck. It turned out to be the relief vent was plugged with mud. I looked but couldn't find a vent. Does this model use a vent? If it does, can anyone tell me where it is located? I want to check that out before I change the seal. It is a 2000 Ranger 4x4. Thanks.
I don't know for sure, but most often, vents on these under chassis units like the rear and front axles consist of a tube running up from a nipple on the housing to the frame with a little screen cap on it. If it's plugged you'll know by removing the upper fill plug and using a length on tubing(tygon is good) with a wadd of bubble gum wrapped around the end for a seal an see if you can pressurize the case with your breath. It should'nt hold pressure as the t-case should be vented. Feel around the top of the t-case for a nipple or a rubber tube connected to it. Follow the tube to the end. There should be a screen cap on the end of it. The silly thing might run all the way to the engine compartment. Pull it off and retest with your bubble gum hose
