My understanding was that on the old gate on the side with the hollow circle just needs to be replicated with a hole saw on the new gate to fit right on.
^^ Yes I considered that or you could cut thru the torsion spring and remove the plug. All of whitch you would lose th lift asist. The gate is manfactured same as 99-07 it has a plug in the in the hollow circle and on the back of the plug has a rod that runs thru the gate to the other side and mounts solid. When the gate is up the rods relaxed. when you lower the gate the rod twist creating torsional sping load. my concern would be if you cut the plug out the rod may start to rattle. Also I noticed on the one at the dealer that had the step they have another bracket about a foot or so from the right hand side. I'm suposing its a stop of some sort for saftey so that if you were climbing the step and the cables on the gate break the gate wouldn't dump you? I whished I would have looked at it closer so I would have had more info to give. Anybody thats looked at it chime in.
Ratical - I am in the middle of switching out my 03 tailgate with an 08 and have run into the "torsion spring lift assist" as a real problem -- won't fit my 03 brackets. I was at Ford today and they swear the 03 brackets and the 08 brackets are the same (even showed me the drawing on the computer)! I am not handy enough to make my own bracket like you did.
Great job on your switch out, hope I have as good a result.
Do you (or anyone else) know if the 08 parts catalog is on-line so I can double check the Ford dealership on this 08 tailgate bracket? I am also trying to use the 03 tailgate lock mechanisms and it looks like there's been a big change there, too. Appreciate it.
No sorry, I dont. or think any online parts dealers have updated to show 08 parts yet. I'm not sure but somebody on here in WA is a ford part seller maybe he can look into it for you.
the lights are gonna take some getting used to they look upside down. other than that I like. also hydrodave are thir any machine shops or custom auto shops in youre area maybe if you show them the pics of the bracket I made the would do one for you. if not, I might if you mail it to me then I'll mail it back asap.
Anybody looking for a New Style 2008 Super Duty tailgate. There is one on Ebay right now the auction number on it is: 250118663237 he has a buy it now of $600, or you can take your chances on bidding, the last coouple he had went for between $510.00 - $600 plus $120 on shipping. Just a FYI for anybody looking.
He must be buying new takeoffs from somebody putting "Tommy liftes" on. If you find the auction listing, just save him your favorite sellers. I'd get one for my 06 F250, but I just shellled out a few extra bucks for my new work vehicle (company car) it's a 07 Expedition. It had stock steels wheels (17") with Continental's. I found a set of 18" Chrome Expedition Limited wheels on Ebay. So I'm gonna swap them out before it leaves the dealers lot.
Lets hope that's what he's doing. A Ford dealer in Northern IL had all the tailgates stole off the trucks sitting in their lot last year. Needless to say they lock them all now. So do I. I plan on getting the power lock kit for it eventually but I've got other stuff on my list to do first.
Update on the torsion spring bracket for the 08: we took a VIN off an 08 on the lot and found the part. My 08 gate is in my 03 F250, looking good. I love the torsion spring, my kids and wife can put the gate up and down now. Needs paint . . .
