'96 Eddie Bauer, fully loaded, 351w, regular gas, cumlative average from last year - 15.9; cumlative so far this year (3rd tank, city mileage) 15.6. Also, I do have the 3.55 gear.
'96 Bronco, 351 Mass Air, E4OD, Manual Case, 3.55 Limited Slip in Rear, 198000km, Installed Remote Starter in November 2001 (I'm in Southern Ontario). I mite run it for 5 min. at most before jumping in, but over 3745km since November 17, I'm getting 14.77 mile per gallon(imperial) mostly city.
I have about 8500 miles on my rebuilt carbed 302 83xlt. Also with 3.55 rearend. I have slowly graduated from a consistent 9.5 mpg to a consistent 10.5.
That is combo city/highway. My best tank of gas so far has been 11.4, and that was all Hwy. in 75 degree weather.
A guy at the parts store the other day was trying to get a 13 second quarter in an old mustang of his. I told him I was trying to get 13MPG out of my 83 Bronc.
My Bronco gets 13-17 mpg, depending on how heavy my foot is. I have gotten 17 several times, and I just have to take it easy and not race off the line. Also, if there is snow on the ground and my front hubs are locked, my mileage suffers.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 06-Feb-02 AT 03:33 AM (EST)]I was at the dealership today, talkin to a buddy thats been workin on Fords for 20 yrs. I asked him what would be the best way to increase mileage. He said normal gap on plugs would be 42-44, but to set them at 54. He also said not to run cheap plugs, but that you don't need platinum either. Get Autolight or Motorcraft copper. I also asked about getting different distributer, other than OEM. He said inless you are racing it's a waste of money. I haven't tried this yet but I will real soon. BTW when I posed the question , I asked about 302 in a Bronco. Also when I asked he was putting new wires and plugs on a F-150. Think he left the gap alone on it though, LOL!
96, 5.0, E4OD, a/c, and a lot of jacks, towing equipt., fire ext., fishing equipt. and bolt-ons; 32x11.50's (adj. for tire size):
15 mpg on trips over 8 miles (sometimes 16 mpg on a good day with da wind); 13-14 on shorter trips on rural roads.
I check tire pressures every two weeks and try to remove heavy stuff from the vehicle.
I think that the better mileages are gotten by reg. maintenace (filters, tire pressures, etc.) and a light big-foot on da gasssss__
and negatively affected by the weight of optional equipt. such as power windows/locks/seats, etc. and brush guards, step bars, driver and pass wt (shhhhh).......as well as the obvious driving habits, weather conditions and maintenance prev posted and..sensor/fuel/air problems.
Well I guess I have to be the oddball here. I get 16-18 in town,18-21 hiway. 90 EB, 302, 3:55 ls, 11.50x31 LTX's, run only 89 proof gas. I also don't crowd the thing, it's big and under powered so I don't push it. Also, I run copper core Autolites gapped at 54. And yes, it looks, drives , and smells brand new.
Sounds like a sweet machine... would like to see a picture of it when you get one posted!
This is the second mention about the spark plug gap set at .054 that I've seen today - looks like I'll have to try it when I tune my Eddie Bauer up next month. I'll keep ya'll posted.
Here's another oddball, 18 - 20 mpg city and 21+ mpg highway in an 87 302 w/headers and a high flow cat. I'm gapped at 44 with stock ignition parts and 31 X 10.5's. 89 or better octane seems to help also.
And yes, it' also underpowered but I love to drive the truck.
