Power steering whine

I know Fords are famous for power steering pump whines. My '89 T-bird SC has always had the "growl" - stated by many a mechanic that it was just how the SC pumps are!! Are the Broncos known for this as well? My '94, 302 is giving a decent growl. Fluid is fine, no change in steering!! Any help????

Yep, it's pretty common. The best fix is to swap to a Saginaw pump from a van of a similar model year.

Power steering whine

Are you positive it is the steering pump? I had a whining coming from the front and it turned out it was the idler arm pulley and the stationary one. I took them off and the bearings were dry and they squeaked when i turned them in my hand. I packed them with bearing grease and haven't had a peep since. Just a thought.

Power steering whine

I recently replaced my leaky unit with a pump from NAPA. It had a tag on it that said it may be noisy for the first 500 miles. It's been about 400 miles and it is still very loud and annoying. It was bled when it was installed. I can't see it magically shutting up as the 500th mile rolls along. I'm pretty pissed about this, and it would be very annoying to exchange it seeing as you have to take the whole bracket off, and get the pulley pulled and then pressed on (the stupid tool they give you doesn't get the pulley all the way back on). And I can just tell that the next pump would probably do the same thing. I wonder if there is some way to get NAPA to have a new pump put on for me, I was having other work done to my truck so I paid someone to install the pump. I shouldn't be responsible for having to go through all of this to exchange a crappy pump that they sold me. Anybody ever been through this? NAPA is supposed to have quality stuff.
