I was wondering if any of you guys could tell me what all i needed to swap 4.56s into my 96f-150 i plan on lifting my truck to run 38s but i dont know where to find the information on how to change them or what i would need other than the ring and pinions. and also doesnt the front axle ring and pinion need to be reverse cut?
Reverse spriral, not reverse cut. When you order the gears they will know what you need. The front also needs a new carrier in addition to the master rebuild kits for both axles.
The process is not easy, requires a lot of patience and time, and lots of special and expensive tools. If you haven't done it before and don't know what's involved, make sure you understand before attempting to try it yourself.
You will most likely end up taking it a pro to have it done.
Make sure you have a lift for this because if its your first time, it wont be pleasant doing it on the driveway laying on your side wrestling the case n ring gear for the first time of swapping. Ring gear is held on the case by left hand threaded bolts, and there are shims on each side of the case makin sure it isnt off center for the specified backlash. Keep the same amount on each side that came out or you will be doing some math on your installation. Make sure you keep everything cleaner than clean. in order to release the axles you have to take the pinion retainer screw and pin out then push the axles in, take the axle clips out then pull axles out of your way. Then un-bolt the maincaps off the case and you will have to pry the ring gear and case out because its a tight fit. When everything is out spray it down with brake clean generously until its clean inside. Reverse disassembly for installation. have fun n good luck man
If you have never done it. You may want to consider having a shop do it. Rear ends can be very tricky, you can end up costing yourself a ton of money if you mess up.
I have a guy thats gonna help me put it together i just needed to know stuff like the reverse spiral and that it needed a new carrier and such. My grandfather owns a garage so tools and a lift are not a problem so i should be set to go, for the most part. Now, I just need to get the money together now for the lift, tires, wheels, and gears. wow when i say it like that kinda makes it sounds like it wont be in the soon near future. But hey no one said building a lifted truck was cheap. O yeah and another quick question will the ttb hold up to 38s. i dont wheel this truck hardly ever and the only time i take it offroad is to pull someone out.
thanks for all the help guys.
