Im building a mud truck and need some advice on a stall.
Im running a 545 stroker with
D9TE block
forged dished 22cc dished pistons .30 over
forged h-beam rods and crank
Edelbrock performer CJ heads with 74cc, 310cc intake runners, springs lift of .750 max
Solid roller cam with lift of .663/.680, duration 246/253, RPM 2500-6800
Roller rockers
Edelbrock victor dominator intake
Holley dominator 1050 carb
That is a difficult question to answer. You are better off spending some money in a dyno room to determine where that engine is really making power, and tune the trans /converter accordingly.
That cam is pretty conservative, I do hope those duration numbers are .050 numbers, and not advertised.
Either way any converter is going to take a beating, and is going to have to be a fairly high end unit. If that thing is making good power at 2500 rpm, and you can get those 52's rolling from that rpm range, then maybe a fairly loose converter with a stall around 3000 to 3500 sounds nice. That should keep rpm's high enough to launch well, and prevent the engine from dropping too many rpm's when you hit the thick stuff, and are forced to grab higher gears under accelleration.
Still takes quite a bit to get them motivated, but it now has a mechanical advantage. The douwnside is the lack of wheel speed required to produce low E.T.'s , it tends to run out of gear before you get to the end of the pit. The plus side, is you have a mountain motor that should be a great ride. Getting the gear combo at the trans, and t-case will have a big affect on converter selection, and should strongly be considered. Good luck with the truck, it sounds like fun.
