have had this expy since new (has 80K mi.). it has been paid for for a while and even though fuel prices are going up again and this thing gets crap for mileage, 12/13 max, i figure i can buy lots of gas compared to what buying a new rig would cost. it's nice on trips as far as comfort and storage capacity especially with my con-ferr rack on top. my main concern right now is what i can do to enhance the performance without losing any mpg and still pass smog. have an 84 ranger that is giving me fits in this area, but that's another story. i've read that 5.4L 4V's are better than 2V's. what do i have? is there anything i can do to this engine to make it perform better without losing any mpg's? i would also like to do some suspension upgrades to lift it without doing a body lift and maybe add some air bags for better towing capability. i also remember reading somewhere about anti-roll parts available for this model. anyway, if anyone has some advice would greatly appreciate it!! can i install manual locking hubs on this thing?
Start with basic maintenance. When was the last time the fuel filter was changed. Also you are getting close to the end of your spark plug life. You might pick up better mpg's if you change these items. You might want to pick up a decent tuner. Now any mpg's you pick up will be negated by lifting your truck. So it kinda defeats the point. As for manual locking hubs, I don't know. If the F150s ever had that option then it may be feasible. And one other thing I was starting to look into for better fuel mileage was electric fans. This will reduce the engine drag by removing the stock cooling fan. Less engine strain, faster rpm's, better fuel economy.

know anything about the tornado?? a lot of the truck accessory vendors have it listed. it supposedly gives a 24% increase in mileage by creating a vortex whic atomizes the air/fuel and better burn. is this just hype? it goes for about 69 bucks.
I haven't heard anything good about them. Plus I have a friend that put one in a diesel and actually lost power. He promptly took it out. I think that's the general feeling on this forum.
thanks for the heads up. it seems there are an awful lot of claims for performance, mileage out there that is just hype and no fact. it's hard to wade thru it all.
I don't know if you have a cold air system on your car but I've heard they'll boost performance a little bit and increase your MPG by a bit. Also, some good exhausts could help out a bit with both as well. I'm sure for the money, you'd be better off just spending it on the gas lol.
Sounds like you have the right idea on avoiding a body lift though. My Expy DOES have a 3" body lift and it's like a sailboat on the highway at 70 mph. When I get back into my other '98 (stock) it feels like a sports car. Although, technically the center of gravity is lower with a body lift then a suspension lift. The point of this story is, I'd stay away from a body lift because if not done properly, I've heard the cab will become detached from the frame.
Good luck on finding some more performance/mpg as I know that with mine I got about 11.5 MPG on a pretty long highway trip this morning.
