99 Explorer 302 shortblock sensor?

Guys where is the knock sensor located on the 99 Explorer shortblock? I have a early model E7TE shortblock and there is a knock sensor on the back of the block. Do I have to run a knock sensor on my 92 F-150 after dropping in this 99 explorer shortblock?

It is possible that the knock sensor is mounted in a different location on the explorer 5.0 or that it doesn't have a knock sensor at all. However, to get the wiring in your 92 truck to match, I'd drill and tap a new hole for the sensor in the 92 truck location on the back of the block.

Well I do know on the oil pan that came with the explorer shortblock there is a hole that is wanting a connector going into the oil pan, but surely that's not the knock sensor hole..

A knock sensor would be mounted directly to the engine block or heads, so if it is in neither of those positions, it might be safe to assume that the explorers did not use a knock sensor. Drill and tap the boss cast into the block where the knock sensor is mounted in the 92 truck block knock.

No. I don't know the logic in these computers, but while I was researching knock sensors the other day, I read that some engine computers will automatically retard the timing a set amount if the knock sensor is not present. I'm really surprised there isn't a place to mount the knock sensor, though, since those blocks should be the same casting. It's not so much of a boss as just a flat spot just behind the intake manifold.

What does this knock sensor do...? Does it pick up a certain frequency through the block when the engine pings or something and then retards the timing?

Yes and yes. Here's a good explanation, with your answer on page 2.

If you had the knock sensor on the old engine, you definately want it on the new one. You'll need to drill and tap a hole on the flat area behind the intake for it.

OK, now, don't get too "happy" with that drill We wouldn't want holes where they aren't meant to be. The one in the oilpan you were asking about is the low oil sensor.
