Fuel Pump or Fuel Injectors? HELP

Hey guys you were very helpfull last time and would like to know what your thoughts are on this.

Everytime I step on the gas I get a muffled sound like the sound you get when your fuel filter is clogged ( i changed that already ) and it just doesnt accelerate like it should and just have the dam muffled sound. Truck has 78 thousand miles on it and its an 02.

Now if its the fuel injectors that is an easy fix but if its fuel pump how much do they go for and what is a ball park figure on cost of replacement.

Thanks again for your help and looking forward to the responses

Have you checked the pressure at the fuel rail? I would do that first - narrow down the causes a bit.

Clean the MAF first. Check for vacuum leaks. The PCV plumbing elbow needs to be checked too

After that, check fuel pressure, not just at idle, but under load too!

When idling, with a fuel pressure gauge hooked up, you should see around 28-30 lbs.

Disconnect (and plug) the vacuum line going to the fuel regulator. Pressure should rise to near 40-41 lbs.

If that all checks out, check out what the pressure is in the "real world" under a load.

Art ,I believe its 35 -39 psi at the rail at Idle. With no drop under load .
This from my old brain though !

Hmm... been doing this to a few different Fords.

Idle pressure is low (28-30), because vacuum is high at the regulator.

Vacuum drops, regulator opens, pressure goes up.

At idle, 28-30 lbs, with regulator vacuum disconnected it goes up near 40.

Under load, because of high flow at the injectors, who knows, but shouldn't drop below, say, 30?

Haven't checked out my V10 yet, but my '96 t-bird 4.6L worked that way, as well as anything multi-port fuel injected back to '88 or so (in my personal experience).

Which one? When I was stationed in Germany & then Schofield Barracks, HI we had an Auto Care shop. It was a self-serve kind o' place where a soldier could go to work on his car. All the tools were there, you just had to sign them out. You don't have one of those?

Pull your air filter and check it out. Some have been known to collapse and break.

Have that auto hobby but training for iraq is draining time and with everyone else there it is pretty much crowded. I will have to see what I can do on the weekend up there and hopefully I can talk to a mechanic and pay for some beer or something. I am at Fort Campbell with the 101 Airborne div.

Fuel pump is in the gas tank. Drop the tank, remove pump.

Not easy...
