'94 460, all new tune parts, timing set to 10* BTDC with the SPOUT disconnected, no CEL and no codes. Just tried (2) Seafoam treatments, and I've still got a nasty pinging under load. I've seen a number of discussions regarding EGR issues causing a ping, but I have not seen much info on how to actually test the EGR system... Is there any way to verify it is working properly and is not the cause of my pinging without just swapping the EGR valve and hoping for the best (a $150 guess...)??
ebay and fordfuelinjection both sell a egr eliminator for around 20-25 u can plug in and see ifit helps before u dish out heavy loads of cash on egr and if u have no emmissions u can just leave it on as it plugs into wireing that goes to egr a 2 min fix
The 302 and 300 six are the only engines that use a knock sensor. The 460 does not have one. If the EGR valve is stuck closed, the eliminator kit won't make any difference because all it does is tell the computer that the EGR valve is closed all the time. Before throwing parts at it, systematically go through and check each sensor for proper operation (any repair manual should have the procedures for each sensor). If/when you find something out of place, that is likely the problem. Have you checked codes yet? If not, that would be an excellent place to start. All you need is a paperclip: http://www.thorssell.net/hbook/eectest.html
Already checked for codes... Am I correct in assuming that since there are no codes that my sensors are working properly? Or is the code retrieval process simply a trivial pursuit to find gross errors?
It could be that a sensor is giving an incorrect reading, but it is within the acceptable range of signals, which would cause problems but would not generate any codes. Have you checked the spark plugs to see what they look like? If they all look ok, I'd check the EGR for any blockages that might cause a lower amount of exhaust gases to be recirculated than the computer thinks since it only knows the valve position, not the actual flow rate. If the valve is opening like normal, the computer will assume the desired EGR flow rate is achieved and will advance the timing and lean the mixture (or whatever it does) for that programmed EGR flow rate. If the passages are clogged, a lower EGR flow rate occurs, yet the computer still advances the timing and leans the mixture as it would with the correct flow rate possibly causing pinging. Since the valve itself is still functioning, no codes are generated.

my truck running real good with the egr eliminator better than it ever did i forgot to add check engine coolant sensor mine was bad and when i changed it ping was gone and i actually added a couple of degrees timing when i changed and it didnt throw any codes
dunno bout that it had its days only difference i guess is no codes but i did that along with a coolant sensor and 02 sensor and made nite and day difference better throttle responce better fuel economy no ping and actually got timing up to 12 degrees and no ping before i did these things it pinged at 6 degrees and had no ballz its a turd but i can live with it now
