I have a problem. My engine has a skip and the code says misfire on #5 cyl. Compression fine, gave it new plugs and wires and replaced the injector. Coil pack fine. $450 later and I still have the same skip and code. My mech, normally reliable has given up. Any ideas out there. Thanks.........AL
Did you actually get #5 items replaced... as in there wasnt a mix up as to which was 5 or 6?
Are we sure its actually #5 thats misfiring? (its not always what the car thinks)
Are we sure there is compression?
Is there signal to the fuel injector?
Did the technician perform an injector balance(fuel dump) test?
Swap any plug wires to rule out bad wires?-loose plug wire?
Swap any pugs to rule out bad plug? (bad plugs do happen)
Was the spark plug wet/fouled?
Sure its not the coil pack? Spray it down with water, is the misfire worse/better?
Is it always misfiring or only sometimes?
Flashing check engine light or no?

That engine has a distributor instead of the coil on plug ignition like the Triton engines, right? If so, Id replace the distributor cap and rotor too.
had a bad run of luck with my 1998 e-150. rear end went then radiator..them ball joints. i'm also getting that mis-fire reading on my fifth cylinder. going to change coil pack this morning. any tip's much needed. i'd love to understand all the parts that have to do with air flow and fuel flow. i think it's a sensor. i also think we are getting some bad gas lately. really nice forum...i changed the lower ball joint myself with insturction from this site..very good photo work.
thanks

Have you had to add coolant? Is your coolant level low?My 97 was missing on cylinder 5 also;after a UOA it was determined coolant was seeping into the oil, past the lower intake gaskets. The gasket was torn near #5! Read this; http://forums.treemedia.com/fb/showthread.php?t=224
Yes, have had to add coolant for years. Never hits the ground so I am aware of it getting into the cylinders. Sometimes when there is a lot I get steam out of the exhaust. Twice a year, I guess. Was it the intake manifold gasket you replaced and did that fix your problem?................AL

Actually, they were done twice! I had Ford replace them back in 2002 to prevent the hydrolock problem.Everything was fine until 2005,when I noticed I was losing about 3-4 quarts of coolant every 5-6 months.Then,#5 started missing.I had a UOA done and found out there were traces of coolant in the oil.I went back to Ford and the lower intake gasket was torn between #4 and #5 and seeping into #5! This time they used the "CORRECT" replacement gaskets and it fixed the problem.BTW,they cut the labor rate in half and charged me there cost for the gaskets!
The engine ran strong as a new one after that! I sold it a few months ago with 135k miles on it!
