Ok fellow Ford luvers...I need some advice. My parents just loaned me $2000 for a vehicle, so now I have a whopping $4500 to buy a Bronco with(or maybe f-150?). Anyway, I need one soon, so I don't have 6 months to browse and find the 'perfect' Bronco. But what years, tranny/engine combos are the best to look for? I've owned 3 cars with the 5.0 in it, and loved them all. I've never driven a vehicle with the 351.. Any thoughts?
Congrats on your loaned "wealth." Wish I could get Mom and Pop to loan me some flow to fix up my Bronco.
I've got an '84 Bronco XLT. Got the right price ($2400) for 168k Miles, reman 302, rebuilt C6, new tires, cold AC, tiny rust. This is my first carb'd vehicle in a while, so it is taking some adjustment. More tiny rust spots are showing up and I'm learning about the leaking body, too. I reckon it's just stuff that comes from an aged vehicle. Just reading the different threads on this sight has given me a lot of insight into upcoming plans for my own Bronco.
Do your shopping quick but don't be in a hurry (if that makes sense.) Seems as though some people have gotten great deals by searching for a longer time. You'll probably find more F-150's than you will Bronco's.
I owned an '89 F-150 a few years back. Great truck. Had I-6, 5-speed. That tranny wasn't very good, though. Had it replaced twice, well once, then the replacement starting going out (bought it used, mistake).
Thanks guys...I've heard a lot of people say the 302 is a dog in the Bronco. I won't be doing any towing, so I can't imagine needing a 351. Although I will be doing some 65-70mph highway driving, but Im sure the 302 can handle that.
I'd go with a 351 because the gas mileage is really close to that of the 302 at least in the 90 Broncos, why not have the power? If you go with an 87-93 or 94(?) be aware that they have speed density fuel injection which sucks and that you limit yourself in terms of engine mods. Also, 90 and newer broncos have E40D which are electronic and won't allow trsnny swaps without a new computer for the truck. I haave heard a lot of good things about the 78-79 Broncos.
I have a 1990 full size Bronco with a 351, it has been an outstanding motor.
if you are planing to do any "upgrades" (i.e. bigger tires, gears, etc.) you will want the power it has over the 302.
302's are for cars not trucks.
