Hello to All
I put gas in my SD today ,I was down to 1/4 tank so I filled up .I've driven 25 miles and the gas gage hasn't came up to full yet,it's moving but very slowly is this normal ??
Thanks
Brian
Yes, at times. Did you have the truck off when filling it? I've noticed that if I have it running (REAL cold winter time) that it'll take a while to go up to full.
Normally when it's off it will register full when starting it again.
I've got an 03 with the 6.0. I've had it happen only once...and it was recently. The next time I re-started the truck, the gauge was fine. I'd say it's a hiccup. Keep an eye on it...but it could be an isolated case.
As others have mentioned I am going to guess that he fueled up while the vehicle was running. I know in my 99 Ford had put in a system that only allows the fuel guage to move so for every few minutes, to get rid of the variance in fuel level when going up and down hills, around corners, etc. If you fuel up while the truck is running it will take 10-15 minutes to reach full in my experience. He should have been able to shut the truck off and start it again and the guage would have read correctly.
However, I have noticed that on my 07 f350 this is no longer true. This winter I was able to fuel up with the truck running and watch the guage rise. I'm not sure if this is becuase it is a diesel, or if there is something different on the 07 truck.
i can watch mine rise as its running and im fillin with diesel. but it has stuck to before at quarter tank with the truck turned off while filling, and i go to start, and it stays at quarter for a few miles, when i get home, turn off, and go out again most of the time it will read correctly, i just think its sticky.. seemed more of a problem in the winter.
My gague will not read correctly after a fill if I turn it back to acc. for everyone inside to listen to the radio while I fill it. If I let it run I can watch it rise as I fill it. If I turn the key off, when I start the truck it will go right to full.
yep. same here. If I leave it in ACC position during the fill, it's all wacked out for about a day or two until it climbs back up.
For the radio, mine stays on even after the truck is off, so to listen to the radio during fill up, I get out (which opening the door makes the radio shut off), start pumping, then get in and quickly kick the key from OFF to ACC and back OFF again. That triggers the radio back on and keeps the fuel guage right.
My new trucks a diesel now so I just leave it run and turn the music up. I usually don't get back inside while it's filling up unless it's real cold out. I try to walk around the truck and look stuff over, or like lately I end up talking to the guys who come up to me complimenting the truck
I leave my car on when filling up in the winter so the wife doesnt freeze, and in the summer so she doesnt melt. And while she is comfortable I do as others have said and walk around the car or run in to the store to grab some drinks or snacks for us.
I dont believe its a danger either, I would surely be dead or burnt if it was. But I tend to live on the wild side, I never turn off my cellphone when pumping gas either . I think a greater risk is created by people jumping in and out of there vehicles while the gas is pumping.
Actually it is a danger with gasoline. Gasoline ignites much easier than diesel fuel, a static spark or lit cigarette can easily ignite gasoline, but not diesel. I would never refuel a gasoline vehicle with it running, but I have no problem doing it with diesel.
My '00 F-450 has had a slow fuel gauge since it was new. Only a few times have I shut it off while fueling over the 173K miles I have driven, and every time it takes about 10 minutes to get to full. If I shut it off, it goes right to full when I restart. I think it is as Beerstalker said, to help keep the gauge smooth. It tends to be more sensitive to the level dropping then rising, though. If I am at 1/4 tank and go up or park on a steep hill, the low fuel light comes on fairly quickly, and the gauge follows, but it takes a while of level driving for the light to go back off. If however, I stop and shut the truck off for a second or two, and restart, the light is out and the gauge is right. I have seen this on many other Super Duties, and would not worry about it, short of making sure that the gauge is actually moving so you don't run dry in some faroff place.
My 03 has always been slow since I have owned it, about a year and a half. I never have mine running when I fill. Mine was on 1/2 tank today when I filled it and it didnt reach full till I was home, about 15 miles.
