Overheating

The truck began overheating. The fans were so loud they drowned out the sound of the motor. I noticed the chalk around the cap. Sure enough, the coolant was 1.5 gallons low. So my question is, where did my coolant go? Out the cap? Why? I view the coolant loss as a symptom rather than the problem.

I've done a search, and either the EGR cooler or blown head gaskets seem to get the blame for loss of coolant. I pulled the oil and it looked fine. No obvious signs of coolant contamination, which I would kind of expect if there was a head gasket issue.

I have noticed lately that I've gotten black smoke upon hard acceleration. Last time it did that the EGR valve was on it's way out. Could this be a clogged EGR valve/high EGR cooler temp situation?

99K on the truck. It's never been modded. It's been at the dealer two days now and they don't have a clue. Any suggestions?

TIA

is there a spray pattern around the cap or just residue?

Some of the chalk was a few inches from the cap, but couldn't say if there was a definitive spray pattern. Hard to tell if it overflowed and dried or what. Didn't get the sense it had really sprayed around though.

I am having same issue...pulled empty 24' enclosed trailer about 60 miles fri night (70 deg F) and my engine oil temp gage on programmer said 218F!! 20 deg warmer than loaded trailer in summer...even when empty truck seems to be running warm...I too noticed a spray of residue and more black smoke on acceleration...i just got truck back from dealer and gaskets checked out ok on wed before. when dealer had it they did the new injector flash.....i noticed truck did not want to shift in tow haul mode too....any chance new program could have altered something?? let me know if you find anything out so i can go back to my dealer too...thanks! 95k on truck..

When I checked back, they were still scratching their heads. I said "Look, it was overheating because it was low on coolant, right? That means the coolant went somewhere, right? That means there's a leak. Call me when you find it." Truthfully I hate to act like that, but this should be basic intuition for anyone that earns a living pulling a wrench.

Two hours later they called to say they felt they'd found the problem. Parts are on order and should be finished tomorrow. I'll wait til tomorrow to post the end result. I don't want to get ahead of myself.

Headgaskets or EGR cooler would be my bet. Headgaskets are the hardest to diagnose since they usually only puke under high demand. Good luck and let us know.

I too am having the same problem. Seems mostly when I am towing, I see antifreeze under the drivers side of the truck. This is my 2nd motor in this truck, 1st one crapped out at 75K, I now have 140K, and its the same pattern. Ford told me there was no 100k warranty on this new engine, just the remainder of the origional 100k. I think this alone is wrong, anyone else had this trouble? I mean the new motor cost me $700 by the time I got the truck back. I would think it would have its own 100k warranty, just as if I had paid.

Ok, according to the tech's write-up, it was leaking at the "orange silicone hose at EGR housing to EGR cooler". He had to remove the turbo and turbo pedestal to access it. He "replaced the orange hose with new updated blue hose". Apparently he had to replace the EGR housing as well. In his notes he said he damaged the original housing.

So it was a hose. It just took four days to figure it out.

that hose can be aggravating to diag a leak from due to its location.

Wouldn't doubt it.

My aggravation was the truck was in the shop two days, and they were about to return it to me unrepaired because they couldn't get it to overheat. It was only when I insisted they look for a leak in the cooling system that they diagnosed the problem. The repair took two days because he had to order the housing he broke.

I have 600 miles left on my 100K diesel warranty. This repair would have been on my dime when I took it back two weeks from now with the same problem.

well i can tell you right now, if the tech had to replace the egr cooler and they had to order the egr cooler, then they are not familiar with the 6.0. im not saying that the 6.0 parts suck, im saying the coolers do fail pretty often enough that the parts department should have had the cooler in stock.

It used to be a very good service department. They fired the service manager of 25 years, and his staff followed him to another dealership. I found this out after dropping the truck off. I won't be going back.

My salesman had been there 18 years. He quit over frustration with new management. They've ruined the one dealership I had respect for.
