hi guys i just got a 67 f-100 for pretty cheap it has a fe 390 in it with a 3 speed stick. i am looking to turn it into a street/strip truck and just something to mess around with. i am looking to build the motor to around 400hp. heres my quwstions can i am looking to find a trans with some more gears i have a chance to pick up a 4 speed top loader for nothing will it be a bolt in swap? is there a 5 or 6 speed that will bolt up? right now i am looking at about 400hp 3.73rear end and a 4 speed what do you guys think?
The 390 is a great engine, easy (somewhat) to build to 400 hp, and you'll have cool points when you're done. If you want to find out a lot about the engine, check out the FE engines forum, they can spend your money over there faster than you can make it, but there is a wealth of knowledge on that board.
Not too familiar with the top loaders, but the short story is that there is no cheap way to bolt on a 5 speed. You could get a Clark or NV4500, but I don't think either would work very well for what you want to do with the truck. Wait around a while and I'm sure someone else will drop in and give you a few good suggestions.
the top loader should be an easy swap as lots of mustangs had toploaders with fe motors. If you can get a top loader for fee get it, even if you don't use it or not. Lots of people have talked about 5 speeds in the fe forum do a search of the forum.

How do you know it's a 390? Did someone tell you that? NO 390's were used in 1967, only the 352 was available. 360 & 390's weren't used till 1968. Ford 4 Speed top loaders were never used in trucks, but will work. You'll have to fabricate a driveshaft, and shift lever. The original lever from the cars is too short to reach even the bottom of the truck seat. You will also want the top loader from a FE engine if possible. You'll have far less headaches if you go with a C6.
ive had ol stang type toploaders in one of my ol trucks. will never put in another there to weak a couple good 5grand holes shots and youll be drivin home in 3rd or 4th. go with a c-6 with a stall converter and a shiftkit much more relieable
