So, this is starting to worry me.... A few months ago I had a clunk in my front driver side wheel when I turned. didnt think much of it because it hardly happend...
Now, It can happen 2-3 times on my way home from work.
Its not just the driver side anymore, but both sides.
What could cause this? Is it something I could do myself (Im no mechanic but know my way around tools) or should I just pay the big bucks and send it in?
Sounds like it could be your ball joints. It’s not something I’d suggest a novice do, unless they were looking for a challenge, but at the same time it’s not terribly difficult either.
hi, i have the same clunk so if it is ball joints do they break and cause damage. sorry for the intrusion but i have not been able to find the cause and it is getting worse. thanks bokker.
I bet its the ball joints... these trucks eat them up... especially the bottom ones...unless you have a air hammer with a wedge you probably wont be able to get the balljoints apart... better take it to a mechanic.
Also have you changed the brakes recently... the bolts on the break caliper tend to work loose after being loosend once... had this happen several times..its a really loud clunking sound when ever i hit the smallest bumps.... the caliper bumps up and down alot when the bolts are loose... be worth lookin into at least
Hmmmm Yes I did do the breaks and from EXPERINCE of one of my caliper bolts falling off, I made sure I used a bunch of threadlock, however, i will check the bolts again tonight...
rsylvstr,
It dose it while moving, not start/stop...
I think my dad had one of the ball joints replaced years ago to (due to squeeking?? dose that sound right that it woudl be the ball joints then?)... and he was a HD mechanic, (I inherited this truck when he passed away), so I guess ill be looking for a mechanic for once (been able to do the rest of the work on it myself).
Now, is there anything SPECIAL about these ball joints?, should I be bringing it to the ford dealer and having my ***** put on a silver plater.. or will the local suspension guys beable to do it no problem and only charge me an arm... leaving my ***** intact?

go to the suspension/front end guys and ask if they can get Moog parts, or another with zerk fittings.
