I've looked at the various under bed tank conversions and was about to buy a Mustang tank to do mine. Luckily, I measured before ordering. It appears that the Classic truck article on this subject (as well as another one here) used the Mustang tang on a long bed truck. Mine is a 66 shortbed and at most I have 27"x27"x10" to work with - that's with moving the crossmember back. The Mustang tank is to big for mine. Any other existing tanks that others have used? A custom tank may be the way to go, but I thought I'd ask if other had another option.
As you posted I assume you read the tech article under tank conversion. The mustang tanks came in different gallon sizes; don't know if this will change the width or just the bulkness of the tank. I havn't done this swap; but thought I post to you in reference to tank size might make a difference. Hope I've got you thinking; and I have send numerous short wheel base conversion; so I know there's a solution.
Good luck.
I made mine for my 64 long bed. At the time I did'nt even check if there was one I could bolt on everything was being done pretty fast so making one was just another step in the build. Thanks to my good buddy Carl. There are pics in my gallery showing completed look.
Came across the article in 'classic truck' mag. Wondered how to deal w/ the inlet, looks like according to article they moved it to another location. Hopefully, article will be of some help. Not sure, may be article in the 'article/spec's' section of the FTE forum.

google is your best friend. I came up with this gas tank site that lists the diamentions of all the make/model gas tanks. The link is for a Jeep CJ but the aftermarket support for bigger tanks is out there is you look for it. This stock one fits in the diamentions you listed but it's only 15 gallon. Hope it helps out a bit.
All thanks for your replies. The classic truck article is great, but appears to be for a long bed. The early mustang tank that they used are too large for the short bed. I have studied ganstakr gallery in the past and like the customer fit, but I lack the welding skills to weld a leak proopf vessel and also imagine that pairing up a sending unit will take some doing.
I like the Jeep solution (thanks for the website, Airharley) since it is 'turnkey', but would like to get a little more capacity. the site will allow me to look for other options. FYI the formula that I found for gallons capacity is
(L x W x H)/231 = # of Gallons
Thanks agai everyone. I will post what I end up doing
Also, may be able to use from later model. If you have the National Parts Depot (NPD) catalog they list the Ford pickup truck fuel tanks from 53-98 and depending upon year, model, and type tranny they list size and whether tank mounts rear of axle, midship, or forward. Also list whether for long, or short bed, etc. They do not list their catalog online but can download, which links to another menu prompting you to select catagory. By opening 'fuel system' should be able to view the selection. Not sure if any help, posted couple sites in case..
Through various other sites I have been able to find tanks as large as 23.9 gallons for the 73-86 CJ's that increase the height of the tank to increase the capasity. Make sure to look at other makes to find some more possiblities. My first post was a 20 minute search through their site to find something that would fit. The other added bonus to running a Jeep tank is that it uses the same ohms sending unit as Ford.
Bronco's 78-96 looking at 33 gals. As you indicated, take measurements and decide where you want to mount it then look for tank that best meets your application. Not too interested in moving tank in 65, but recall member who brought inlet out thru the bed rail. Kinda liked it but would have made it flush w/ the rail and hidden inlet under a door. Saw what appears to be inlet and door kit that could be mounted on bed rail in Sacramento Vintage Ford catalog.
Thanks again guys. I really appreciate the help! It's also good to know that the current sending unit may be usable if I go with the customer tank option. My dad had a 65 f100 for years without any problems with the in cab tank. The reason that I'm looking at converting is because I have the bed off and have been detailing/painting the frame and figured what the heck. You know we get to reading all the cool stuff that we can do and we get hooked - at least that's happening to me
