6.0 Over Heating

I recently bought a 2004 f350 crew,6.o with 58000 miles. I drove it from Texas to Indiana 80 mph all the way and one other 200 mile trip, The temp gauge stayed in the normal range. Then I tried it on my trailers, pulled a 24 ft flat 20 mile round trip with 4000 lbs on it and it did fine. Then I tried my 35ft
camper (14000lbs) and did not get one mile from the house and the temp gauge was in the red. My first thought was a stuck thermostat because
the top hose was hard but this did not fix the problem. I know these motors had head gasket problems, have not noticed any water in the oil or oil in the water. Does anybody have any thoughts on what might be causing this. And what were the symptoms of the head gasket problems? I am still driving it to work empty every day with no problems, it just seems to be scared of the camper. This is my 2nd power stoke, had a 1997 7.3 and it handled it ok
but I wanted to up grade to the tow haul trans.

Thanks for any help
Jeff

Jeff, I'm not a mech...just another truck owner.

Have you tried towing the 14k trailer again? Did you get a repeat of the original episode? If yes, but it only overheats with the higher weight then you have more info for the professionals.

Good luck!

According to the trailer life towing guide. Max weight for the 6.0 2004 f350 is 12,900lbs max. http://www.trailerlife.com/output.cfm?id=42175 Just go to the year and download the specs. Also check the true weight of the trailer by going to a scale. My wife adds about 1500lbs of stuff to the trailer when we go anywhere.

Yes we changed the thermostat and tried the same trailer and got one mile down the road again.

There was a Technical Service Bulliten about faulty gauges regarding my 05. It might be the same for yours.
I took mine to the dealership and they put it on the scope. They found that the computer had no record of any overheating, even though my gauge showed that I overheated a few times while towing.
They changed the instrument panel under warrantee and it never showed hot again. Stays right where she belongs, in the operating range. It was a relief to know that I hadn't overheated my truck, and that it was just a bad gauge.

Is the fan clutch engaging? If not there might be the problem.
