ok im lookin for a tranny to rebuild befor mine goes out. i was lookin in the local yard and came across a 92 extended cab 4x4. it appeard to have the e4od in it. but when i looked inside it didnt have the OD cancel on the end of the shifter or anywhere else in the cab. the shift pattern on the dash was correct tho. mighta been a colom swap? cause it was the older style colom.
well i was just wondering if there was a variant of the e4od...the pan looked identical to my e4od...shape, fins and magnet mount indents.. i could only see one side cause the truck had no wheels on one side. all of the electronics are the same in the 4x4 vs 4x2 e4od correct?
At some point and I don't recall exactly but around 95/96, the connector for the E4OD electronic trans functions changed but if need be, you could get the trans harness/cut off the connector with a foot of wire or so from the junkyard vehicle. The electronics are the same but a 4X4 trans and a 4X2 trans are physically different so don't get one if you have the other. Unless you have a 4X4 and want to go to 4X2.
why? i have the 4x2. i didnt see a difference other then the tail end. the crossmember is different from what i saw. and i didnt see a problem since im doin a total swap,4x2 to 4x4 swap. what are the differences?
If you're doing a complete 4X2 to 4X4 swap including the "married" transfer case (bolted onto the trans), there won't be an issue. If you are going to take a 4X4 trans that looks like the one in the picture below and use it for 2wd, I think there might be a couple of issues. First, I don't know if the driveshaft yoke will slip onto the output shaft. If it does, once you get rolling down the road you will have a large rotating mass that is unsupported for a relatively long distance. This would be hard on the transmission internals and the output shaft. A 2wd trans has a bushing inside the rear seal that keeps things lined up.

In a '92 F150 the button should be on the dash, to the right of the steering wheel, directly under the fuel or temp gauge (can't remember which one is on the lower right...)
i dont realy see the problem.. the tcase on the back of the e4od that im lookin at is identicalwith the exception that it is the electric shift 1356. yes it is a married case and all i think i should need is the front drive shaft and tranny crossmember out of the donor truck. by the way the trans in that picture is like nothing ive seen befor. the one im lookin at looks just like the 2wd version except that it has the tailend of a 4x4 tranny. thanks for ur help guys
