I have a 98' F-150 4.6L and my check engine lite is back on. It was only out for about a day but it is now on with the same code(401)EGR Sys low flow. I have a slight hesitation or "stutter" at 30-35 and again at 40-45 @1500rpm it does this four or five times and then the lite will appear. It dosent seem to be as noticeable until the truck is driven for about 10 miles then it will almost become a "bucking".
I have changed plugs and wires with no change. I have also changed: EGR valve, EGR Solenoid, DPFE Valve. I have no vaccum leaks or plugs. I have even removed the elbow that links the EGR valve to the throttle body and cleaned the two ports which were completely clogged.
Any one with a new Idea?? Could it be that its not the EGR system and the code is coming up Inaccurate? Any help will be appreciated!
The elbow just behind the EGR valve is clogged. The location is just behind the throttle body. It is a common problem for the 98's take off clear all ports, clear codes and you will be fine.
Thanks for the info but as I wrote before, I have already done that. They were completely clogged and I thought the problem would be solved as well. I have no vacume leaks or plugs either. I am now wondering if I may have two problems and the code 401 is coming up before any other code has a chance to. Is this normal for the truck to have a studder like this for an EGR problem? When I first bought the truck, It was intermittant and the ck eng lite would come on for 5-10 miles then go out.
I really dont know what else to do. This is my sixth ford truck
(I used to build monster trucks) and I have always been able to figure out what was wrong with them but this time I guess I will have to give in and take it to the dealership. Is there any one who can solve this?
Did you replace the DPFE sensor or the EGR vacumn solenoid, Usually the 401 is a DPFE sensor but the valve can caue it to. Also hav seen the EGR ports in the intake get cloged got to reove the throttle body to get to em a easy test is to get a vacumn pump and pull vacumn after bout 10 psi the motor should stall if it doesn't then the EGR tract is clogged. And an EGR prob will cause a small shutter.
Sorry forgot to say that you pull the vacumn on the EGR valve to test it. That is probally your problem its not hard just unbot the throttle remove the gasket and you'll see the tract and all the carbon that shouldn't be there.
I had the same problem. The only other thing I did besides you is change my fuel filter. Don't ask me but that is what I did and the problem went away. I have driven it for about 500 miles and everything is good. I also cleaned the two ports that go down to the intake behind the throttle and changed my EGR. That's all I know though bud.
