4x4 grinding

Long story short: Previous owner swapped from M5OD to ZF and did not get new driveshafts. I had to do some work on the tranny and removed the driveshafts to do so. I could not put the front shaft in because it was too long. That has since been fixed but now that I have four wheel drive back, I decided to put it to use. I locked the hubs yesterday on the beach of a local lake and put her into 4 high and started going. I emediatly noticed a grinding/ clanking sound from the right front. She still drove out in four wheel but the sound is horrible. I haven't used the four wheel drive in 1 to 2 months.

I have manual 4 wheel drive and someone swapped Warn hubs in long before I owned the truck. I have owned her for about 6 months.

Is this most likely a hub issue or an axle issue, has anyone experienced this before?

Any easy way to tell would be to throw it in 4 while leaving the hubs UNLOCKED. Accelerate forward so the front driveshaft and axle shafts get a chance to spin. If no grinding then you can bet it is a problem in the hubs, and an easy fix. If the grinding persists then you have a driveshaft/axle issue. Other than the splines in the hubs, I'm not sure what could make a grinding noise coming from the front right wheel... Are you sure that's where it is coming from? Can you elaborate a bit on what it sounds like? Is it a ratcheting effect that is consistent with the speed at which the axle shaft is spinning? If you roll foward slowly does it just click-click-click or does it still grind?

For *****s and giggles, you might also try locking the hubs and driving the truck in 2wd. This will spin the axle shafts and the driveshaft but they will spin free of the t-case. Don't do this for too long on dry pavement. If no grinding noise there, then you've got an issue in the t-case.

It is definatly coming from the right front. I'll try putting it in 4 wheel during lunch with the hubs unlocked and see what I get since that will tell me for sure if it is a hub or not. I replaced my hubs on a 93 Bronco I had a while back and the was easy but I was also going from auto to manual hubs so if it is the hub it'll be even easier.

OK, put it in four wheel drive with the hubs unlocked and it looks like the passenger side hub is toast. [EDIT] It made no noise at all without the hubs locked in! [END EDIT] I'll pick some up and replace em this week, thanks Skandocious!

As far as greasing and such? Never serviced hubs before, haven't had a four wheel drive vehicle long enough to. My bronco I owned for 6 months maybe when the engine blew and that was my first four wheel drive. What all is involved?

I assume you mean ATF, as in Automatic Tranny Fluid?

One of the previous owner did the swap, I thought it was awful nice of them! LOL

You will need to address the drive shafts! This swap leaves ther rear to short and the front too long. Apparently it will get you by for a while but you will need to do it and I recomend that you do it up front and save the headache later! I'm just glad mine seperated while I was stopped, if it waited 10 more minutes I would have been going 75 and that would not have been good! Getting a new rear made and shortening the front also eliminated the vibrations I was having! The rear was really bad!
