Torque Converter question

Hey, I know I'm not in here a lot. I have a question though. My father-in-law is having his '85 F150 restored. It was an I-6, 4 speed manual. It
s going to get a V8 (302) auto from a 1991 Mustang. My question is.... What would be the best torque converter for this swap? The engine is a mild build (should dyno about 280 RWHP).

Should I use the stock Mustang TC for this thing, or something else? The truck is a 1985 shortbed F150.

-Thanks!

It depends on what the rearend gear ratio is. Is the tranny going to be overdrive?

I have no idea what the rear gear is. Is there a common gear for the '85 I-6, 4-speed manual?

The new tranny is the AOD from the Mustang though.

91 AOD has a final drive of .67:1 so even with 4.56:1 differential you will have an effective final of 3.0:1. It is more than likely that the differential is closer to that of 3.55:1 and the AOD will make it 2.37:1. These are very tall and believe me, you will be lugging that 302 at 55-65mph.

Wow. I forgot about this thread!

It's been over a month, and it's getting very close to being done!

So what would be a good source if I were looking to buy a better gear for this rearend?

I went through this with my 85 Flareside. My cam is the E cam from Ford Racing in a 306. We called B&M for a torque converter to put with my AOD. Thinking that since they had a big name behind them, they'd be a good company, they sent me their POS Tork Master 2400 and said that would work excellent with my 28 inch tall tires, .498 lift and 3.55 gears. NOPE. I got MAYBE 2 feet of rubber with one wheel from a dead stop. I even changed to a posi and 4.10 gears, still no rubber. No flash, no stall, no *****. Long story short, I called Dirty Dog Performance www.dirtydogperformance.com . Alan sent me a 9.5" non-lockup with a 3k stall. It's an animal, 1st and second gear is pretty much all rubber and I love it, yet it still maintains about 2300 RPM on the highway. A lockup would be nice for highway driving, but for performance with an AOD, most converter manufacturers will send you with a non-lockup. I'd reccomend moving up to at least a 3.73 gear in the back
