x pipe

I am curious about putting a x pipe in my dual exhaust system. I have a 78 f150, 400, 4 speed, 4x4, 40 series flowmasters straight from headers to rear. I saw an article in Perersen's 4wheel drive (jan 08) about installing an x pipe or h pipe if you have a true dual exhaust. Anybody have any experience with this?

Thanks, Wallyford

Put a crossover of the next size smaller than exhaust pipe size right behind the collectors, a crossover helps torque and does not have to be round. Crossovers for most apps just carry gas pulses -no flow (except high hp).

Well if your thinking of doing it get the X pipe.
It took years of explanations and reading to convince me but the way I understand it is the X will actually increases the flow of your duals. The flow of the 2 pipes mixing in the X causes a vacuum witch pulls from each side so it's pulling the flow and increasing it.
Ive had my duals for about 3 or 4 years now and I finely was convinced to get a Magnaflow X pipe that I'm putting in with a set of long tube headers.
I'll let you know how it turns out and how I like it when it's in.

A x or h pipe is going to help you. The "h" pipe typically picks up more torque down low whereas an "x" pipe will pick up horsepower up top. The h pipe gives you the traditional muscle car rumble and an x pipe has a more raspy sound to it.

I made my own H pipe out of some 2 1/4 inch pipe i had laying around and it made a noticeable difference in power. It also smoothed out the exhaust tone a bit. (89 F-150 302 with hooker headers no cats and glasspacks)
