Got a '02 Edgewith the V6 3L Flex Fuel engine. I "heard" that the injectors are of a larger rating the non-E85 engines. If this is so could a set of the "smaller" injectors be installed w/o detrememt to the engine?
Theres no E85 in this part of TX. I dont need POWER at $3 a gallon for regular 87 gasoline. More concerned about the MPG.
You would need a different PCM to run different sizes of injectors, or at least to reprogram your current one. That, plus the injectors themselves, is going to cost a good bit of money you could just spend on gas.
The flex-fuel injectors are ineed different (higher flow) than the regular ones. But your PCM is already tuned with that difference in mind (commanding shorter pulse widths). Changing them out will screw up the engine management system; it will not get you better gas mileage.
In a nutshell, the computer tells the injectors how long to stay open. Since the computer is calibrated for the higher flow injectors, it knows to leave them open a shorter amount of time with gasoline, and a longer amount of time with ethanol.
If you put smaller injectors in, you'll get even LESS fuel flow, which will cause many many more problems, if it would even run at all.
