Thinking of a tow rig with EFI460 engine, hopefully 5 speed but will take a E4OD auto.
What stuff can be taken off the EFI460 without dramatically effecting the engine performance, stuff like the carbon canister, smog air pump( will be running headers eventually), A/C pump (whole system would be yanked)?
Any pump taken off will not be replaced with a eliminator pulley but shorter belt.
If such and such item is taken off, what happens? Askin personal experiences, please.
I have never taken anything but the muffler off mine, but from what I understand the smog pump and stuff like that really doesnt rob any HP. The cat however has been said to rob a few ponies, which makes sense as big as it is and with only a 2.5" outlet.
I would recommend a ZF5, they seem to have a little better durability record. It seems the E4OD, while a good transmission, will likely cost you some big bucks for a rebuild and mega bucks for a "built" one.
Yeah, since original post in this thread, I have become more likely to hope find a f250 with a zf 5 speed, leave the carbon canister in there as its part of the fuel system??? and gonna yank the smog pump, AC system, and run headers with just like you said, dual 2.5" exhaust, no catalytic convertor as we Albertans done HAVE to have them.
Air pump can go, it's really in the way. Saw off the bracket and use a Dayco 5060475 belt. Lose the cat, and go with Gale Banks Engineering complete ex. You only want the ZF 5 speed. They are around. If you pull heavy, get 410 gearing it gives you 2500 rpm at 75 or so. A bit busy if you run unloaded or empty a lot. You can block off the egr valve with a plate, just leave the valve connected so the computer thinks it's working, other wise the check engine light will be on. The charcoal cannister(s) are just fuel evap deals for the fuel tanks, good to have, don't effect anything.
Yes you can lose the air pump but leave the rest as when you start pulling control items the computer will go south and you go to limp mode. A friend of mine has a ranger like that and he gets worse milage than my f-350.
