We all know that Ford's engineers were lazy when they designed the ac manifold hoses/routing (the two hoses that attach to the back of the compressor); the rubber sections (where they are crimped to metal) are either touching a sheet metal screw near the grill for the top one, while the bottom one sits on top of the rack and pinion shaft. Needless to say, my bottom hose has worn through and in need of replacement. I know I need the spring lock release tool to disconnect the couplers... Has anyone attempted to remove the hose assembly from the compressor? It is held on by one nut, but what are the chances of fitting my hand in there, and through which method?
When you remove a/c hoses, you lose the (very expensive) R-12 Freon. If the hoses are worn through, and the R-12 Freon is already gone, the system must be evacuated by a garage that has the proper equipment. NAPA and most A/C shops can make new hoses from your old sample. Ford dealers can too.

Thanks for the quick reply.
I have converted to R-14 already. I'm more interested in the labor aspects of this; I'm wondering if this will be akin to the "infamous sixth spark plug removal"?
Woops, I forgot to mention that I have a 92 3.0
For the record, I jacked up the van on the passenger's side and was able to put a 10mm with extension to remove the hose housing from the compressor. Now to get the hose and finish the job!
BTW, from my vantage point behind the passenger A-frame, it seems that all the right hand spark plugs are pretty accesable with a socket and wrench. I will post this on the today's "last spark plug--arghhh".
Be sure to replace the O-rings on the back of the compressor with R134 compatable ones they are green in color. The spring lock removal tools are very cheap I got mine at Autozone you only need them to remove the hoses. They simply press on during installation.
Also I hope you changed the accumulator otherwise your new hoses can corrode since the accumulator removes moisture and when the dessicant eventually gets saturated this moisture mixes with the refrigerant and creates acid that attacks all of the metal parts.
