Need New Tires

Hi,

My 2004 XLT Supercab 2x2 will be needing tires soon. I live in Central Texas, Austin area, and drive rural roads 100 miles to and from work.
I currently have Michelin LTX A/S, 255/65/R17, original OEM.

At 39,000 they show signs of wearing out soon. I have been basically satisfied with the tires, but considering prices, I want more mileage out of the new ones.
I'm not looking for bigger or fancy. Basically road tires that can handle the spring rains and an occassional bit of ice or snow.

I am considering (in order):
Goodyear Wrangler SilentArmor - 265/70/R17, $163
Bridgestone Dueler - A/T 255/65/R17, $176
Michelin LTX M/S - 255/65/R17, $183

The Wranglers don't come in 255/65/R17, but I think 265/70/R17 will be close enough. I have seen very good reports on this tire.
The Michelin LTX M/S seems to have much higher ratings than the A/S in all areas.

These prices are from the military PX at Ft. Hood, and also tax free. So I will probably want to stay with models that they carry.

Any recommendations?

Why spend that much money if you're just looking for basic highway tires?

The Generals that came with my truck have the same treadwear rating as the Michelin LTX...and they are almost half the cost!

Tirerack.com sells the Michelins for $171.00 a piece, but the General Ameritrac TRs sell for $91.00!

I still have the Generals, and I like them. Nothing special, and not as good off road as the Wrangler SilentArmor or the Dueler A/T, but they work just fine on the road, and I've yet to get the truck stuck in the mud.

BTW, my '95 Blazer has the Dueler A/T Revos, and they are great tires. I'd never spend that much money on tires unless I actually took the truck off-road frquently, but they are nice to have!

I recently put a set of Firestone Destination AT's on, and they're beautiful! The Destination also comes in a highway type tire. I'm not sure about the reviews on them but I think they make them in your size. The Destination AT's have very high reviews. I concur with those reviews, so far.

Here's the thread I started when I had them installed.

You would get twice the mileage out of a set of LTX M/S compared to the Generals, and also get a better ride. All the tires you listed are good tires. I have a set of the LTX's on a fullsize conversion van. The tires have 50,000 miles on them and ook to be about half worn out. They are the best wearing tires I have ever used.

Well....

they both have the exact same treadwear rating...meaning they should last about the same.....
