Mine are really tight to turn, I pulled off the driver side one and pulled it apart totally. I cleadned it and re greased it. The problem in in the turning mech. thare is a rubber seal/boot that covers it on the inside. Is this part replacable? I want to remove it to clean and lubricate the mechenism. I have a buddy that used to have the same problem and he did the same thing i just did and it did'nt help him either.
I noticed on my 2007 SD it is super easy to engage. what changed? is it interchangable to my 99?
Too much grease is a big problem with these. They usually bind, and stick after a grease application. In this case, less grease is better. After a gool cleaning, a light lubrication is best.
Actually replacing them with an aftermarket set better, especially if you have the troublesome ESOF system.
One of the first things I did to my first SD. They are a little troublesome with vacuum. I used Warn premiums that came with the Dynatrac kit. I also replaced the unit bearings with serviceable ones, and installed new outer shaft with 35 spline units. Never have had a problem with anything up front again. The same is true for my Excursion too.
No more unit bearings, no more problems with the hubs, no more troubles at all. Now when they are locked, I know they are locked, and when free, I know they are unlocked, they do not stick, and rotate smooth as butter.
