Today my truck ran into a starting problem (96 250 auto 4x4 351w)lots of miles over 200,000.Anyway the alternator and battery are both new (4 months old both)and there good had advanced check them today on there charge check thing.I turned the key and nothing but a click.then i turned the key a second time and truck started.it did this 4 or 5 times to me today everytime with a click.I cant tell where the click is coming from.the starter i put on 2 or 3 years ago no more im pretty sure it was a new one.and the solenoid on the inside fender i put on 4 months ago.coil new put on 5 months ago.the ignition module has never been replaced its from 96.what would you think is causing the problem?thanks any info will help.
PS just to let you know I have 2 amps conected to my stereo ones 200 watts the other is 300 watts .ones connected to the fender solenoid 200 watt and the 300 watt to the battery not sure if this has anything to do with it?but i doubt it.
The click you are hearing is most likely the primary starter relay on the fender. I don't believe that your stereo equipment would effect the starting because generally speaking, when that circut becomes live, most all other go dead.(accept for the ignition ofcoarse). If you can hear a click than most likely neutral safety switch is allowing current to flow to the relay. does that starter have a external solonoid on top of it?
well if it is the solenoid on the fender i think its odd it went bad in 4 or 5 months.im not sure about an external solenoid on the starter but if i had to guess i would think it doesnt.where is the neutral saftey switch located?thanks
The solenoid could be bad, but a more common cause is a loose connection. When you first try to start it, the connection is bad, and it arcs over and welds itself temporarily. Then the second time it's good enough to start. Vibration, etc. breaks it loose, and there you go again.
I would take off and scrape and clean the battery connections. I would also take the starter solenoid connections loose and clean them too. There is a chance were you have your amps connected, the connection has gotten loose.
P.S. Also check and clean the ground where the battery minus cable hooks to the block.
thanks franklin i will check them all.what the best way to clean the connections anyway?..anyway it hasnt done anything today i started up fine every time.i drove it for an hour or so today.thanks for the info!
