57 Core support question

Are the V8 and 6 cyl core supports the same in relation to the spacing of the radiator. The six is longer and I was wondering if there was a change made to move the rad further forward for fan clearance. Or, is the mounting flange offset different between the 6 & V8? I need a GOOD 6 cyl. radiator should anyone have a spare.

The engine mounts are Completely different between the Y-Blocks & the Inliners & I've played w/ quite a few "Orphan Years Trucks, '57-'60" in my time.
The only difference that I know of between them is the Radiators themselves, as in I believe different hook-up locations for the Hoses for Y-blocks & Inliners.
NumberDummy would know for sure, as I've not access to my FoMoCo Reference books @ present.

It was always my understanding that the radiator support was mounted a couple of inches more forward on the crossmember for the sixes. Maybe that was only on the 48-56, though.

Thanks for the replies guys, but I've changed my plan, I'm going to buy an alum. crossflow rad. from speedway, and make it fit. Speedway is just too cheap not to. $159!!!
Thanks again.

Blue,

I still have the V-8 radiator that I took off the '59 B-600 that I had. The difference between it and the I-6 radiator is that the mounting flange on the side brackets is spaced differently.

Thanks for the link, it looks like they have quite a selection. I'm sure this will be helpful to quite a few people as the topic of radiators comes up quite a bit on this board

I showed the catalog to a buddy of mine with a 440, 69 Durge PU and he's buying one too. I'll let you guys know how it works out. The minor mods to the core support should pay off big in cooling.

That would be me, in my '58 Mercury M-100.
I'm the 3rd family member to own the "Wee Beastie" as Father & Uncle owned her previously.
She was Uncle's Ranch Truck for 40 years out in Rubidoux, CA.

Questions for the Col.

I would be interested in seeing what you did for motor mounts. I built my own crossmembers (eng. and tranny) and left the stock (bellhousing) crossmember for strength at the critical front cab support area.

I may have to pull the front clip if I ever need to pull the eng again, as I can't drop the AOD from the rear (stock crossmember clearance) and can't pull the whole eng/trans from the front due to crossmember/firewall/core support clearance. The front clip was off when I installed the eng/trans. Maybe this engine will last long enough that I won't have to worry about that, and my grandson will deal with that after I'm gone.

What kind of trans are you running, and what did you use for a speedo cable to link the new trans and old speedo?
